Atoll Electronique has been building hi-fi electronics since 1997 in Brécey, Normandy, based on a simple principle: plenty of power supply, short signal paths, little show. Founded by brothers Stéphane and Emmanuel Dubreuil, the boards are still hand-assembled in their own factory today, and every unit is tested twice before it goes into the box.

What makes Atoll Atoll

Almost every unit is true dual-mono – two separate power supplies, two separate signal paths. Add to that generously sized toroidal transformers, filter capacitances you'd otherwise look for a price class higher, a discretely built Class-A preamp stage and MOSFET output stages. What you don't get: colourful displays and marketing features. The money goes into the power supply, not the brochure.

The series at a glance

• Mini – MS120, MD100, MA100 and PH100 in a 32cm format for small rooms and second systems.
• Series 100 – IN100 Signature and CD100 Evolution: the classic entry point into fully-fledged full-size technology.
• Series 200 – IN200 Evolution, CD200 Evolution, DR200 Evolution, ST200 and SDA200 Signature, PH200.
• Series 300 – IN300 and PR300 Evolution, AM300 Evolution, ST300 and SDA300 Signature. The upper class.
• Series 400 – IN400 Evolution and CD400 Evolution, the flagship with a 10mm front panel and 1050VA transformers.

Upgradeable, not outdated

An Atoll amplifier is rarely finished. Phono cards (P50, P100) and DAC cards (DA200) can be fitted later, and CD players from the 100 and 200 series become full D/A converters with the DC200 card. So you're not buying for stock, you're upgrading when you actually need it. Every Atoll device comes with two years of warranty – service and repair run through our own technician.

Honestly speaking

Atoll doesn't sound spectacular, it sounds right – if you're after the last bit of effect and kick, you'll feel more at home elsewhere.
