USB Cables

A USB audio cable connects a computer, streamer or USB source to a DAC and transmits the digital signal.

Why a good USB cable?

USB is today one of the most important connections to the DAC, because it easily transports high resolutions and DSD. A USB audio cable carries both data and power in one line – good examples separate or shield cleanly, so as little interference as possible from the computer reaches the DAC. So it's less about tonal colour and more about a clean, low-interference handover to the converter stage.

What matters

What matters is the right connectors (often USB-A or USB-C to USB-B on the DAC), good shielding and solid build quality. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil we check which connections your source and your DAC have, and whether the USB connection is even the best choice in your case – modern DACs with asynchronous USB are often the first choice. We select the cable to match the interface.

Who it's for – and straight talk

For anyone connecting a computer, a streamer or a USB source to an external DAC – from a desktop setup to a fully-fledged streaming chain.

Straight talk: with USB cable too, the rule is: data either arrives correctly or not at all. The debated added value lies in better shielding and clean power delivery, not in "prettier bits". A solid, correctly terminated cable covers the needs of most. Whether more effort is audible depends on the DAC and source – we tell you honestly.

Verdict: the right connectors, good shielding, solid build quality – then the USB connection to the DAC runs stably. In very noisy setups, it's worth looking at shielding and power delivery; we advise you on that.

Frequently asked questions

Does a USB cable sound different?

The data itself is transmitted correctly; any audible difference stems at most from better shielding and clean power delivery that keep interference away from the DAC. How large the effect is depends on the setup. We assess this realistically.

Which connector do I need – USB-A, USB-B or USB-C?

That depends on your devices: many DACs use USB-A or USB-C on the source side and the classic USB-B input on the device side. Tell us which sockets your source and DAC have, and we'll supply the right combination.

How long can a USB audio cable be?

For stable USB audio transmission, shorter runs of up to around two to three metres are ideal. The longer the cable, the more important quality and shielding become. If you need a greater length, we'll find a suitable solution for your setup.

What about jitter and interference?

Modern DACs with asynchronous USB clock the signal themselves and are less sensitive to jitter. Good shielding still helps keep high-frequency interference from the computer at bay. We recommend the connection that best suits your DAC.

Do I need an audiophile USB cable?

Not necessarily. A solid, correctly terminated cable covers the needs of most setups. More effort pays off especially in noisy environments or high-resolution chains. We advise you based on need, not on the price tag.

Why buy USB cables at HD Zürisee?

Because we know your devices' interfaces and tell you whether USB is even the best connection to the DAC, or something else. Instead of bit esotericism, you get a suitable, low-interference solution. We advise you personally and deliver throughout Switzerland – free shipping from CHF 190.
