The Atoll MD100 Evolution is a CD player in midi format with a genuine TEAC transport and a discrete Class A output stage.
32 instead of 44 centimetres wide – that's the whole difference from the full-format world. Nothing is skimped on inside: the transport is a genuine TEAC, centrally mounted and suspended to keep resonance low, and the output stage works discretely in Class A.
Why the MD100 Evolution?
Because it proves that a small CD player doesn't have to be a cheap CD player. Separate power supplies for the digital and audio sections, around 10,400 µF of filter capacitance, and a Burr-Brown converter with 24-bit/192 kHz sit inside a chassis nearly twelve centimetres smaller. Visually and formally it matches the MS120 and the MA100 – together the three make a remarkably complete system in very little space.
What you hear
Surprisingly quiet for its size. Distortion sits at 0.002 percent, the signal-to-noise ratio at 112 dB(A) – voices stay clean, cymbals don't turn harsh, and the bass doesn't lose itself. Besides the analogue RCA output there's coaxial and Toslink, in case you'd rather convert externally.
Who is the MD100 Evolution suited for?
For second systems, home offices, bedrooms, and anywhere a full-format player simply doesn't fit – and for anyone building a small but seriously intended chain. In plain terms: it has no digital inputs and can't take an option card either; it's a player, not a converter. There's no headphone jack, and the level is fixed. Anyone running a large system in the living room should reach for the CD100 or CD200 Evolution.
Our verdict
A CD player you don't buy for the numbers, but because it fits exactly where nothing else fits – without sounding like a compromise. Together with the MS120 and MA100, it forms a fully-fledged system on half a shelf. Frequently asked questions
How big is the Atoll MD100 Evolution?
32 centimetres wide, 8.3 centimetres high, and 21 centimetres deep – around a quarter narrower than a full-format device. That means it fits on shelves and sideboards where a 44-centimetre player wouldn't stand a chance. It matches the MS120 and MA100 formally.
Does the Atoll MD100 Evolution have a headphone output?
No. The MD100 Evolution is a pure source with no headphone amp. Its analogue output level is also fixed at 2.0 volts and isn't adjustable – it belongs behind an integrated amplifier or a preamp.
What transport is inside the MD100 Evolution?
A genuine TEAC transport, centrally mounted and suspended to keep resonance low. That's a true audio transport, not a repurposed computer drive – that's what sets it apart from many affordable players in this size class.
Can I connect the MD100 Evolution to a D/A converter?
Yes. Besides the analogue RCA output there's a coaxial and an optical digital output. That lets you also use the MD100 Evolution as a pure transport feeding an external converter or an amplifier with a digital input.
Why buy the Atoll MD100 Evolution at HD Zürisee?
