The Atoll CD200 Evolution is a CD player with a TEAC transport and Burr-Brown converter, expandable via an option card into a D/A converter for external digital sources.
Seven kilograms for a device that spins a disc – that sounds like overkill, until you hear what a properly powered transport and a decent output stage add up to.
Why the CD200 Evolution?
Because two things come together here that rarely do: a genuine audio transport from TEAC's Pure Audio line and a power supply with three transformers, ten regulated supplies and 21,450 µF filter capacitance. Conversion runs through a Burr-Brown PCM1792A at 24-bit / 192 kHz. And if you need digital inputs later, the DC200 card can be retrofitted.
What you hear
Calm and substance. Voices sit centred and solid, strings stay silky rather than sharp, and the bass has contour instead of just weight. The player doesn't make anything prettier than it is – which means well-recorded discs sound genuinely good. Output is analogue via RCA and digital via coaxial and Toslink, in case you prefer an external converter.
Who is the CD200 Evolution for?
For anyone with a grown CD collection who wants more than just playback. And for anyone looking for a player that can later double as a converter for TV and computer. Plain talk: out of the box it has no digital inputs – those only arrive with the DC200 card. There's no XLR output, its level is fixed, and you connect headphones elsewhere. If you only spin a CD once or twice a year, the mini-format MD100 Evolution suits you better.
Our verdict
A CD player that takes the disc seriously – and with the DC200 card, digitises half your living room besides. Anyone claiming the CD is finished has probably never heard a well-mastered recording on a player of this class. Frequently asked questions
Can I use the Atoll CD200 Evolution as a D/A converter?
Not out of the box – it has no digital inputs. With the DC200 option card, a coaxial, an optical and an asynchronous USB-B input are added. The CD200 Evolution then also converts TV, streamer or computer signals via its PCM1792A.
Does the CD200 Evolution have a headphone output?
No. The CD200 Evolution is a pure source. Its analogue output level is also fixed and not adjustable – so it belongs behind an integrated amplifier or preamp, not directly into a power amp.
Which transport is inside the Atoll CD200 Evolution?
A TEAC CD-5020B from the Pure Audio line, so a genuine audio transport and not a repurposed computer drive. It plays CD, CD-R and CD-RW, reads MP3, WMA and AAC files from discs and displays CD-Text.
What's the difference between the CD200 Evolution and the CD100 Evolution?
The converter: PCM1792A instead of PCM1796, plus ten regulated power supplies and a more elaborate output stage. The transport and controls are comparable. The difference lies in refinement and quietness, not in feature set.
