Collection: XLR Cable

An XLR cable transmits analogue audio signals in balanced form between HiFi devices – for example between preamp and power amp, or between DAC and preamp.

Why an XLR cable?

The balanced XLR connection carries the signal on two conductors of opposite phase plus ground. Interference that couples in along the way hits both conductors equally and is largely cancelled out at the input. That makes XLR more robust than RCA over long runs and in electrically noisy environments – and ensures that what arrives at the amplifier is what the source sent out, instead of hum and interference.

What matters

What matters is that your devices are actually built to be balanced and don't just carry an XLR socket. In addition there are solid connectors with secure locking and a suitable length. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil we check whether XLR brings a genuine advantage in your chain, and terminate balanced cables to custom length on request – in the length and with the connectors that match your pre-amp and power amp.

Who it's for – and straight talk

For chains with genuinely balanced inputs and outputs: separate pre-amps and power amps, high-quality DACs, longer connection runs or noisy environments.

Straight talk: XLR is not an end in itself. You only get the benefit if both devices really operate in balanced mode. A plain XLR socket on a device that's internally unbalanced brings no gain over good RCA. We tell you honestly whether the switch is worthwhile in your case, or whether RCA is entirely sufficient.

Verdict: with genuinely balanced devices and longer runs, XLR is the more robust choice. Solid connectors, matching length, done. If you're unsure whether your devices are balanced, we'll look at it together.

Frequently asked questions

What does a balanced XLR connection give you?

It suppresses interference that couples in along the cable run, because the signal is transmitted on two conductors of opposite phase and recombined at the input. This helps especially over long distances and in electrically noisy environments. With genuinely balanced devices, this is a real advantage.

XLR or RCA – when is which worthwhile?

XLR is worthwhile with genuinely balanced devices, long runs and noisy environments. RCA is the widespread standard and is entirely sufficient for typical distances. If your device isn't genuinely balanced internally, XLR brings no audible gain. We'll help you decide.

Does my device have a genuinely balanced output?

This is usually stated in the datasheet; an XLR socket alone is not proof. Some devices run unbalanced internally and just use XLR connectors. Tell us your device, and we'll check whether the balanced connection actually brings anything.

How long can an XLR cable be?

Balanced connections tolerate significantly greater lengths than RCA without losing quality – several metres are unproblematic. That's exactly one of their strengths. If you need a particular length, we'll terminate the cable to fit.

Do you terminate XLR cables to custom length?

Yes. We make balanced cables in the length you want with high-quality XLR connectors, cleanly finished and securely locking. That way the connection between pre-amp and power amp fits your setup exactly.

Why buy XLR cable at HD Zürisee?

Because we first check whether XLR brings a genuine advantage in your chain, instead of simply selling it to you. We terminate balanced cables to custom length and choose the matching connectors. We advise you personally and deliver throughout Switzerland – free shipping from CHF 190.
