The Atoll AM300 Evolution is a stereo power amplifier in true dual-mono construction that delivers 2×150 watts at 8 ohms and can be bridged into a 500-watt monoblock.
Power amplifiers are the most honest components in the rack: no display, no app, no modes. One input, one switch, two speaker terminals — and the question of whether there's enough current. At 16 kilograms and with two 440 VA transformers, the answer is pretty clear.
Why the AM300 Evolution?
Because it's consistently split in two. Each channel has its own power supply, its own transformer, its own rectifier; 83,600 µF of smoothing capacitance stands ready in reserve. The power stage runs on MOSFETs in Class A/B, and the speaker terminals are made of tellurium copper. At the input, a front switch lets you choose between RCA and balanced XLR — the latter pays off once the cables get longer.
What you'll hear
Authority. The bass gains contour instead of bulk, orchestras stay intelligible even in tutti passages, and loud doesn't get tiring, it just gets louder. Bandwidth reaches up to 200 kHz, THD sits at 0.005 percent — figures you don't hear, but whose absence you notice. A trigger input switches it on automatically with the preamp.
Who is the AM300 Evolution for?
For anyone moving from an integrated amplifier to separate components — and for anyone with speakers that could use more grip in the bass. If you want to upgrade later, buy a second one and run them bridged in mono. Plain talk: without a preamp or a streamer with an adjustable output, it stays silent — there's no volume control at all. A headphone output is also missing, and in a small room with high-efficiency speakers it's simply oversized. And it doesn't need a remote control, because there's nothing to operate.
Our verdict
Paired with the PR300 Evolution or the ST300 Signature, it forms a chain that plays well above its price. Trevor Butler wrote on 18 February 2026 in The Ear: "Anyone looking for a two-box streamer/amplifier solution should not hesitate in listening to what the Atoll ST300 Signature/AM300 Evo can do." The Dutch FWD Magazine awarded the combination 9 out of 10 points and the "FWD Aanrader Award" on 2 April 2026. Frequently asked questions
How much power does the Atoll AM300 Evolution have?
2×150 watts at 8 ohms and 2×280 watts at 4 ohms. Bridged as a monoblock, that's 500 watts at 8 ohms. Two 440 VA toroidal transformers and 83,600 µF of smoothing capacitance make sure these figures stay available even under transients.
Can I run two AM300 Evolution units as monoblocks?
Yes. A switch on the unit sets it to bridged operation, and each power amp then delivers 500 watts at 8 ohms on one channel. Two units together form a true monoblock pair. Note: in bridged operation, the tolerable speaker impedance drops — we'll check that with you.
Does the AM300 Evolution need a preamplifier?
Yes. It has no volume control and no source selection — just one RCA and one XLR input. In front of it belongs a preamp such as the Atoll PR300 Evolution, a streamer with adjustable output such as the ST300 Signature, or an integrated amplifier with pre-out.
Does the AM300 Evolution have a headphone output?
No. The AM300 Evolution is a pure power amplifier: signal in, speaker power out. For headphones you'll need a separate unit, or a preamp or streamer with a headphone jack in front of it.
Why buy the Atoll AM300 Evolution at HD Zürisee?
Because a power amplifier is only as good as what's connected in front of and behind it. We'll check level matching, impedances, and cabling with you, recommend the right preamp, and take care of delivery, installation, and service with our own technician.
Pairs well with
In front belongs a preamplifier or a streamer with adjustable output. Behind it, floorstanding speakers that can actually put the power to use — and proper cables in between.
