Collection: Dolby Atmos Speakers

Dolby Atmos speakers create sound from above and turn a flat, two-dimensional surround sound into a three-dimensional sound field. They come either as ceiling speakers, as upward-firing add-on modules, or as speakers with an integrated height channel.

Why Dolby Atmos

Classic surround only plays on one level around you. Atmos adds the height: rain, a helicopter, voices from above – the sound gets a ceiling. The result is a noticeably more enclosed, more realistic sound dome that pulls you deeper into the film.

What matters

What's decisive is how the height sound gets into the room: real ceiling speakers are the cleanest solution, add-on modules use the reflection off the ceiling and can be retrofitted without any structural work. The prerequisites are an Atmos-capable AV receiver and free power-amplifier channels. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil we work out which variant suits your ceiling, your speakers and your receiver – and install it on request.

Who it's for – and straight talk

For anyone who wants to extend their existing surround system to real 3D sound and owns or is planning an Atmos-capable receiver.

Straight talk: Atmos add-on modules work best with a reasonably flat, smooth ceiling – sloped or very high ceilings swallow the effect. Where that doesn't fit, real ceiling speakers are the more honest choice. We tell you beforehand what's realistic in your room.

Verdict: Atmos is the most convincing upgrade for an existing home cinema – if the room and receiver play along. Add-on modules are the uncomplicated entry point, ceiling speakers the optimum.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between Atmos add-on modules and ceiling speakers?

Add-on modules sit on top of the front speakers and fire upward, the sound is reflected off the ceiling to the listening position – ideal for retrofitting without drilling. Ceiling speakers are built directly into the ceiling and deliver the most precise height sound, but need installation work.

Do I need a special receiver for Dolby Atmos?

Yes, the AV receiver or preamplifier must support Dolby Atmos and offer enough power-amplifier channels for the height speakers. Only then are the height channels correctly decoded and driven. We check with you whether your device is suitable.

How many height speakers do I need?

Two height channels, e.g. as 5.1.2, already bring a clearly audible effect and are a sensible starting point. Four height channels as 5.1.4 deepen the spatial effect further. For most living rooms, the two-channel variant is a very good ratio of effort to effect.

Do add-on modules work on any ceiling?

They work best with flat, smooth ceilings of normal room height, because the sound is cleanly reflected. With very high, sloped or heavily structured ceilings, the effect loses impact – real ceiling speakers are the better solution there.

Can I keep using my existing speakers?

Generally yes: the Atmos height channels supplement your existing set, most of which you can keep. It's sensible for the height speakers to match the existing speakers sonically. We tune the addition to your system.
