Collection: AV Preamplifiers
An AV preamplifier – also called an AV processor – is the control centre of a high-quality home cinema: it receives and decodes all picture and sound signals, processes multichannel formats such as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, and passes the audio signal on to separate power amplifiers. It deliberately has no speaker power amplifiers of its own.
Why an AV preamplifier
Anyone who wants to get the maximum out of their home cinema separates signal processing and power. The preamplifier handles decoding, calibration and control – the multichannel power amplifiers supply the power for the speakers. This separation keeps interference away from the sensitive preamp section and lets you choose the power amplifiers freely according to speakers and room size. The result is more control, more headroom and a cleaner sound even with demanding speakers.
What matters
What matters is the number of decodable channels, the supported audio formats, the quality of the room calibration and enough current HDMI connections. Just as decisive is the matching with the power amplifiers – they need to suit the speakers. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil we plan the chain of preamplifier, power amplifiers and speakers as a whole, and on request take care of installation and calibration on site so that everything works together in the end.
Who it's for – and straight talk
The AV preamplifier is for home cinema enthusiasts with larger rooms, demanding speakers and the wish for maximum quality. If you want a compact, uncomplicated setup, you're cheaper off and better served with an AV receiver.
Straight talk: The separation of preamp and power amp isn't a marketing gimmick, but it only pays off from a certain level of ambition. In a small living room with compact speakers you'll hardly hear the difference to a good receiver – but you will feel the higher price and the space it needs.
Verdict: The royal road for large, serious home cinemas: maximum flexibility, clean signal processing and power to measure. Anyone who wants the best, and has the room for it, can't avoid the combination of preamplifier plus power amplifiers.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference to an AV receiver?
The AV receiver has the power amplifiers for the speakers built in, the preamplifier doesn't. With a preamplifier you additionally need separate multichannel power amplifiers. This brings more power and flexibility, but costs more and needs more space.
How many power amplifiers do I need for it?
As many channels as you want to run speakers on. Power amplifiers come as multichannel blocks or as individual modules – so you can tailor the chain exactly to your speaker setup. We plan that together with you.
Is the effort worth it compared to a good receiver?
In larger rooms with demanding speakers: yes. You gain headroom, control and a calmer sound. In small rooms with compact speakers the audible difference is small – then a receiver is the more sensible choice.
Can I combine a preamplifier and power amplifiers from different manufacturers?
In principle yes, the connection is via standardised connectors. What matters is that the levels match and the power amplifiers suit the speakers. When planning, we make sure the chain works in harmony.
Is an AV preamplifier future-proof?
A big advantage: if a new audio format or a new HDMI standard becomes important, you only replace the preamplifier – the expensive power amplifiers stay. With a receiver you may have to replace the whole device.
Why buy an AV preamplifier from HD Zürisee?
Because a separated home cinema chain only shines when preamplifier, power amplifiers and speakers are matched to each other. We plan the setup as a whole, honestly advise you on whether the effort is worth it for you, and on request take care of installation and calibration on site. We deliver throughout Switzerland – free shipping from CHF 190.
