A streaming preamplifier combines a network streamer, DAC and preamp in one chassis – the digital control centre of your system, missing only the power amp.
Sources go in, volume and sound are under control, and the signal moves on to a power amp or active speakers. Streamer, converter and preamp sit in one block, only the power stage stays separate.
Why a streaming preamplifier?
Because it bundles the three most sensitive links in the chain – streamer, DAC and preamp – into one cleanly matched device and leaves you free to choose the power amp. You get modern streaming like Spotify, Tidal, Qobuz, Roon and AirPlay plus a full-fledged high-end preamp, and choose the power that suits your speakers. From MOON to NAD to Gato Audio, the range spans from a refined entry point to uncompromising high-end.
What matters
A streaming preamplifier doesn't play alone: it needs a power amp or active speakers behind it. What matters is the supported services, a good app, a stable network – and that preamp and power amp match in level and connections. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil we'll tell you honestly whether the separate solution meets your standards or whether an all-in-one is the smarter route for you.
Who is a streaming preamplifier for? (Straight talk)
Ideal for anyone building a separate setup with their own power amp or active speakers, and wanting to bundle streaming, DAC and preamp in one high-quality device. Straight talk: if you have passive speakers and don't want a separate power amp, buying a preamp otherwise leaves you wondering why no sound comes out – a streaming amplifier with built-in power is the more honest route then. If you deliberately want to choose the power amp yourself, this is exactly the right place.
Our verdict
The streaming preamplifier is the preamp of the streaming age: source, converter and sound control in one device, the power to your taste. Tell us which power amp or active speakers are in play and which services you use, and we'll find the model that holds your chain together.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference to a streaming amplifier?
A streaming preamplifier has no built-in power amp – it controls, converts and streams, but needs a separate power amp or active speakers. A streaming amplifier already has the power built in and drives passive speakers directly. Which route makes sense depends on your speakers and your standards, and we're happy to work that out with you.
Do I still need a power amp or active speakers?
Yes. A streaming preamplifier delivers the signal, but not the power for passive speakers. A power amp belongs behind it – or you use active speakers that bring their own amplification. Tell us what you have or are planning, and we'll match preamp and power amp cleanly to each other.
Do I additionally need a DAC or streamer?
No, both are already built in. The network streamer and a high-quality DAC are integrated into the device, saving you two boxes and the cable clutter between them. In higher classes, an external DAC can still extract a bit more, but that's fine-tuning, not a must – we'll compare that with you directly.
Do I need a paid subscription?
No. Streaming services are an option, not a requirement. The devices also play internet radio, your local files on the network and via Bluetooth, entirely without a subscription. With Qobuz or Tidal you additionally bring Hi-Res into your home if you like – we've been a Qobuz partner since 2018.
Can I connect my turntable?
Depending on the model, yes: some streaming preamplifiers have a phono input or an optional phono module, others need a small phono preamp in between. Tell us which turntable and cartridge you use, and we'll check in advance what fits, instead of surprising you after purchase.

Goes well with this
Find the matching power behind it among the power amps. If you'd rather have streamer and amplifier in one chassis, check out the streaming amplifiers. Active speakers that bring their own power amp along are found among the streaming speakers, and the matching passive speakers among the speakers.
