The Yamaha GT-5000 is a belt-drive High-End turntable that, as one of few decks, offers a genuine balanced XLR output straight from the cartridge.
Its name stands for "Gigantic and Tremendous" – the legendary GT series of the 1980s, whose principle it revives: mass against vibration. The result is a hefty deck in the piano-black finish of the NS-5000, which only reveals just how serious Yamaha is once you unpack it.
Why the GT-5000?
Because nearly everything here is built against the grain – and deliberately so. The tonearm is short and dead straight instead of curved, with no anti-skating: Yamaha bets on maximum rigidity and lets physics do the rest. The 5 kg aluminium platter rests on a heavy brass subplatter, the chassis is made from four layers of laminated fibreboard, and the motor sits decoupled in the base plate. And then there's the balanced XLR output: it lets the tiny cartridge signal travel undisturbed all the way to the phono stage – a rarity in turntable design.
What you'll hear
A stillness in the groove's floor from which the music truly steps forward: lightning-fast dynamics, rich tonal colours, and a bass that benefits from the sheer mass. The GT-5000 plays neutral and correct without ever sounding cold – a deck that doesn't push itself into the foreground but lets the record speak.
Who is the GT-5000 for? (and who it isn't – straight talk)
For vinyl enthusiasts looking for a deck for life who have the space for one. Straight talk: the GT-5000 comes without a cartridge and without a dust cover (the DCV-5000 is available separately) – so you choose the cartridge and phono stage separately. It's also large: around 55 cm wide and 40 cm deep, so plan your placement in advance. The straight arm doesn't suit every cartridge equally well – we'll advise you here so the combination works.
Our verdict
The GT-5000 is an uncompromising statement deck: build quality on the level of instrument-making, a rare balanced signal path, and looks that command a room. What Hi-Fi was thoroughly impressed by the GT-5000. Paired with the right cartridge, it's a deck you'll never let go of – we're happy to help you choose the right one.

Frequently asked questions
Does the GT-5000 come with a cartridge?
No. The GT-5000 is supplied without a cartridge so you can choose the system freely to your taste. We're happy to recommend a suitable MM or MC cartridge and mount it professionally – so the combination is right from the start.
Why doesn't the GT-5000 have a curved arm or anti-skating?
Yamaha deliberately opts for a short, straight arm for maximum rigidity and a very direct, open sound. It's a distinct design philosophy. In practice, the arm performs excellently with many cartridges – we'll advise you when choosing one.
What does the balanced XLR output do?
The cartridge signal is extremely small and prone to interference. Via the balanced XLR output, it travels with its own ground path all the way to the phono stage, reducing hum and interference. Provided your phono stage has balanced inputs – otherwise you simply use the RCA output.
How big and heavy is the GT-5000?
It's a real heavyweight: around 55 cm wide, 40 cm deep, and about 26 kg with the arm. Plan the placement and a stable, level surface – and count on two pairs of hands when unpacking. The mass is part of the concept: it keeps vibration away from the music.
