The Thorens TD 202 is a manual turntable with belt drive, an integrated MM phono preamp and a USB output with analog-to-digital converter for digitizing records — here in high-gloss walnut.

The walnut veneer under piano lacquer isn't just decoration: it turns a sober device into a piece of furniture that doesn't look out of place even next to a 1950s sideboard. Technically identical to the black version, visually a completely different statement.

Why the TD 202?

Because it does two things that would otherwise cost you two devices: listening and archiving. The solid plinth, the cast-aluminum platter and the TP 71 tonearm with detachable headshell form a solid basis. Add the built-in A/D converter — USB cable to the computer, start the recording software, and the flea-market rarity ends up on your phone too. If you only want to listen, just leave the USB port alone. It costs nothing in terms of sound.

What you hear

The Audio-Technica AT-VM95E with elliptical stylus noticeably digs deeper into the groove than a conical entry-level cartridge: more fine detail, cleaner treble, better channel separation. The belt keeps the DC motor away from the platter, wow and flutter sits at 0.2% — the music stands calmly, instead of wavering slightly. Honestly: the TD 202 isn't a bass monster. Tonally it plays rather lean and tidy — and that's exactly what makes it so pleasant in the long run.

Who is the TD 202 for?

For anyone who wants to listen to their collection and back it up — old recordings, bootlegs, heirlooms that aren't available anywhere to stream. And for beginners for whom a device that looks good in the living room matters.

Plain talk: if you'll never digitize a record, you're paying extra for the A/D converter — then the TD 201 is the more honest buy. And if you already have a good phono stage and are eyeing an MC cartridge, better look straight at the TD 402 DD or the 1500 series. A USB port doesn't replace a better turntable — that's just how it is.

Our verdict

The TD 202 in walnut is the sensible way to use vinyl both ways — enjoy it in analog, back it up in digital — while looking good too. Nothing about it is spectacular, but everything is done right. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, we set it up for you so the first recording is right the first time.

Frequently asked questions

How do I digitize my records with the Thorens TD 202?

You connect the USB output to your computer and record using recording software — free programs are entirely sufficient for this. The analog-to-digital converter is already built into the turntable; you don't need any extra hardware or a subscription. We're happy to show you the process step by step once.

Is the walnut TD 202 technically identical to the black version?

Yes. Turntable, TP 71 tonearm, cartridge, phono preamp and A/D converter are the same in both finishes. The only difference is the surface: walnut veneer under high-gloss lacquer instead of black piano lacquer. Which sounds better is decided by your room — not the veneer.

Do I need a phono preamp for the TD 202?

No. The MM phono preamp is built in, so the turntable runs on any normal line-level input. If your amplifier has a good phono input, or you own an external phono stage, you switch off the internal preamp and use the better option. Both paths are open to you.

Can I swap the cartridge on the TD 202 later?

Yes. The TP 71's headshell detaches via bayonet mount. Within Audio-Technica's VM95 series, even just swapping the stylus is enough to gain sonically. We carry matching styli and cartridges; we'll take care of the adjustment for you on request.

Why buy the Thorens TD 202 at HD Zürisee?

Because advice at our store means: we first ask about your room, your system and your records — and then tell you honestly whether this turntable fits. Our technician sets it up, delivers and installs on-site on request. After the purchase we remain reachable, with no phone queue.

Goes well with

The biggest sonic leap comes from a better cartridge — within the Audio-Technica VM95 family, a finer stylus is often enough. You'll find care accessories and record mats at Thorens. Still comparing? Here are all turntables. The factory-mounted Audio-Technica AT-VM95E is also available from us separately — as a replacement or second cartridge.
