The Tannoy SGM 15 is the largest 2-way floorstanding speaker in the Super Gold Monitor series, carrying a 15-inch Dual Concentric driver in a 50-kilo walnut cabinet.

It's the modern answer to what happens when you don't shrink a studio monitor, but let it be what it wants to be. A 38-centimetre cone, 93 dB efficiency, and a frequency response starting at 35 Hz – these are numbers from an era when speakers were still allowed to take up space.

Why the SGM 15?

Because cone area can only be replaced by more cone area. The big coax moves air without effort – and that's exactly where this effortlessness comes from, the quality small drivers lack at every dynamic peak. On top of that comes a 3-band energy control system: you set treble roll-off, treble energy, and presence energy with a switch to suit your room, instead of remodelling the room.

What you hear

Big dynamics without aggression. Drums get attack, orchestras get scale, and a bass solo sounds like an instrument rather than an effect. Because tweeter and woofer sit on one axis, the imaging stays stable off-centre too – in everyday use, the most important advantage of this design.

Who is the SGM 15 for?

For large rooms, for studios, and for listeners who appreciate understatement. Plain talk: 65 cm wide, 1.03 metres tall, and 50 kilos apiece – that's an investment in space, not just money. In an 18 m² room you'd be fighting it rather than working with it. In that case the SGM 12 is the more sensible choice, and we'll tell you so.

Our verdict

The SGM 15 isn't a speaker for background listening. It's a tool and a pleasure at once – and in the right room, one of the most effortless ways to listen to music there currently is. Before you invest here, we'll take an honest look at your room together at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big does the room need to be for the Tannoy SGM 15?

Realistically from around 30 m², with at least 3 metres of listening distance. The 15-incher only unfolds properly with air around it. In smaller rooms it crowds the soundstage – then the SGM 12 is the better decision.

Which amplifier suits the SGM 15?

93 dB at 8 ohms is undemanding: 30 to 150 clean watts is enough for almost every situation, even from a powerful tube amp. More important than power is an amplifier that keeps the large bass driver under control. We'll give your dream setup an honest assessment.

What are the three controls on the front for?

They control treble roll-off, treble energy, and presence energy. This lets you adapt the speaker to reverberant or heavily damped rooms without a tone control in the chain. It's the most effective lever against typical room problems – we'll set it together during installation.

Is the SGM 15 also suitable for home cinema?

It can certainly handle level and dynamics. For pure home cinema, though, it's overqualified and needs a matching centre and surround setup. As the front of a music-oriented system, it works brilliantly. We'll plan that with you.

Why buy the Tannoy SGM 15 at HD Zürisee?

Because at 50 kilos per speaker, nobody wants to reposition it twice – we deliver, set it up, adjust the controls, and honestly check beforehand whether your room can carry it. Our technician Mauri stays your contact person afterwards. Call us, write to us, or reach out on WhatsApp.
