The Tannoy SGM 12 is a 2-way floorstanding speaker from the Super Gold Monitor series with a 12-inch Dual Concentric driver and front-firing bass reflex ports.

It's the middle child of the SGM series – and for many, the point where it works best: big enough for real depth, compact enough for a normal living room. The walnut veneer and gold-anodised control panel aren't a coincidence, they're simply how Tannoy does things.

Why the SGM 12?

Because the 30 cm coaxial driver places tweeter and woofer on a single axis, turning it into a point source. That gives an image that still holds up even when you're not sitting exactly in the sweet spot – one of the most practical benefits of this design. The front ports also make it forgiving near walls, which counts for more in real living rooms than any line on a spec sheet.

What you hear

Neutrality with substance. The SGM 12 doesn't flatter, it shows – and stays relaxed over long listening sessions because the tweeter is cleanly coupled through the horn. The controls on the front let you adapt treble energy and roll-off to your room.

Who is the SGM 12 for?

For medium to large rooms, for listeners who value honesty, and for home studios. Plain talk: it's a monitor. If you want a speaker that flatters every recording, the Prestige series suits you better. And at 44.7 cm wide, it's no picture of slimness – make sure it fits your room.

Our verdict

The SGM 12 is a classic in modern dress: studio-monitor virtues, living-room looks, a driver with seven decades of development history behind it. Anyone who wants Tannoy coaxial without stepping into Prestige price territory very likely ends up here. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, we'll check with you whether your room and amplifier play along.

Frequently Asked Questions

SGM 12 or Cheviot Legacy – what's the difference?

Both use a 12-inch Dual Concentric and are similarly sized. The Cheviot is the classic, warmer HPD take, the SGM 12 the more sober monitor design. The difference is taste, not quality. A side-by-side comparison usually makes it clear fast.

Which amplifier suits the Tannoy SGM 12?

91 dB at 8 ohms is uncomplicated: 30 to 120 clean watts covers most rooms, and tubes with enough headroom work equally well. What matters is control in the bass, not the number on the spec sheet. We'll assess your setup honestly.

How big does the room need to be for the SGM 12?

From around 20 m² it plays relaxed, with 25 to 40 m² being ideal. It wants some listening distance so the coax can properly integrate. In smaller rooms, the SGM 10 on stands is the smarter choice.

Does the SGM 12 need spikes?

It comes with adjustable feet so it stands firm even on uneven floors – which is enough in many cases. On thick carpet, a rigid coupling adds more definition in the bass. We'll take a look at your floor and recommend accordingly.
