The Scansonic HD M30.2 is a three-way floorstanding speaker with a ribbon tweeter and two rear-mounted passive radiators – the flagship of the Danish M series. Developed with technology that trickles straight down from the super-high-end workshop Raidho. In short: Danish engineering you can afford without a second mortgage.

Why the M30.2?

Because four drivers and two passive diaphragms work together here without stepping on each other's toes. The refined neodymium ribbon tweeter draws highs that stay airy instead of grating. Two 6.5-inch woofers deliver bass with control, while the 4-inch midrange driver keeps voices present and tangible. Instead of a bass reflex port – which likes to pump and gasp now and then – two passive radiators work on the rear. The result is deep, clean bass that fills the room without overrunning it.

What you hear

A large, three-dimensional stage where instruments have their fixed place. The M30.2 plays open and fast, with real punch on percussion and a coherence rarely found at this price point. With 88 dB sensitivity and a benign 8-ohm load, it's no amplifier tyrant – it gets along with a surprising number of devices. The magnetically attached front cover can stay on or come off, purely to taste.

Who is the M30.2 suited for?

For medium to large living rooms, and anyone who wants a fully grown floorstander that keeps bringing joy long-term – even after the third hour. Straight talk: if you listen in a 12-square-metre room right against the wall, you won't tap its potential and are better advised with the smaller M15.2 or M20.2. And yes, speakers of this calibre deserve a decent amplifier – a bargain-bin amp would be like hitching a race car to a manure cart.

Our verdict

The M30.2 is the kind of speaker that sounds pricier than it costs – thanks to its Raidho genes. Anyone looking for a floorstander that's refined and powerful at once should put it on the shortlist. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil we help you pair it with the right amplifier and room.

Frequently asked questions

How big should the room be for the M30.2?

The M30.2 feels at home from about 20 m² upward and plays confidently even in large living rooms. In very small rooms right against the wall its bass quickly becomes too much – there the M20.2 or M15.2 is the smarter choice. A bit of distance from the rear wall rewards you with a clearer stage.

What amplifier does the M30.2 need?

Thanks to 88 dB sensitivity and a benign 8-ohm load, it gets along with many amplifiers. Scansonic recommends 50 to 200 watts. More important than raw watts is quality: a clean integrated amp achieves more than a loud powerhouse. We're happy to advise you on the right combination.

What do the passive radiators offer instead of a bass reflex port?

Passive radiators deliver deep bass without the airflow noise a bass reflex port can generate. The result is a tight, controlled low end that stays clean even close to the wall – a trait usually found only further up the price list.

Aren't ribbon tweeters delicate?

The M30.2's neodymium ribbon tweeter is robust and built for the long haul. It resolves more finely than classic dome tweeters while staying pleasant – highs that don't fatigue even after hours. Coming from hard metal domes, you'll hear the difference immediately.
