The Scansonic HD M20.2 is a slim 2.5-way floorstanding speaker with a ribbon tweeter and two rear-mounted passive radiators. It sits in the middle of the Danish M series – and likes to play a class above its price tag.

Why the M20.2?

Because it packs the M series' large stage into a living-room-friendly format. Two 5.25-inch woofer/midrange drivers deliver crisp mids and bass that reaches surprisingly deep without laying it on thick. The refined neodymium ribbon tweeter adds highs on top that are airy and precise. Instead of a bass reflex port, two passive radiators work on the rear – keeping the low end taut and making placement less fussy.

What you hear

A spacious, cleanly organised soundstage with real drive. The M20.2 sounds coherent and confident, whether with delicate acoustic music or big dynamic swings. With 88 dB sensitivity and a benign 8-ohm load, it's no diva of a speaker – it runs well on many amplifiers. The magnetically attached front cover stays on or comes off, as you prefer.

Who is the M20.2 suited for?

For small to medium rooms where a fully grown floorstander would otherwise be too much. Honestly: if you want to fill a large room and still have headroom at high levels, you're better off with the M30.2. And if you only listen to the radio in passing now and then, you're strictly speaking spending too much money on too much quality – though it would be nice all the same.

Our verdict

The M20.2 is the series' sensible sweet spot: almost the flagship's poise, considerably more living-room friendly. A floorstander you buy and then rarely question again. Which amplifier suits it best is something we're happy to work out with you at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil.

Frequently asked questions

What room size suits the M20.2?

The M20.2 performs well in small to medium rooms, roughly 12 to 30 m². Thanks to a passive radiator instead of bass reflex, it's forgiving in placement and tolerates some proximity to the wall. For large rooms needing high levels, the M30.2 is the more powerful choice.

What's the difference between the M20.2 and the M30.2?

The M20.2 is a 2.5-way system with two 5.25-inch drivers, while the M30.2 is a larger 3-way flagship with its own midrange driver and 6.5-inch woofers. The M30.2 plays bigger and deeper, the M20.2 is slimmer and more living-room friendly. Both share the same ribbon tweeter.

What amplifier does the M20.2 need?

With 88 dB sensitivity it's undemanding and suits many amplifiers. Scansonic recommends 50 to 180 watts. A clean-sounding integrated or streaming amplifier is entirely sufficient – we're happy to help you find the right combination.

Does the M20.2 need speaker stands?

No, the M20.2 is a floorstanding speaker that stands freely on the floor. What matters is a firm, level footing and some distance from the rear wall. Spikes or glides, depending on the floor covering, add the final touch of control.
