The Ortofon VNL Premounted is a DJ cartridge with a spherical stylus that comes factory-mounted on the black Ortofon SH-4 headshell, so it's ready to play straight away.
Plug in, set the tracking force, go. The VNL system is Ortofon's answer to the question of how much punishment a cartridge has to take in everyday DJ use – and how to build it so it still treats your records gently.
Why the VNL Premounted?
Because the VNL concept grows with you: the VNL II stylus is fitted at the factory, and the VNL I and VNL III styli with differently stiff suspensions are available separately. That way you tune the system to your style without replacing the cartridge. The body is ultrasonically welded and the stylus is assembled robotically. The SH-4 headshell is sturdy and rigid, with high-quality contacts to the tonearm.
What you get
A solid, record-friendly signal of 6 mV that suits scratching, back-cueing and DVS setups alike. The spherical stylus copes well with heavily used grooves, the kind that inevitably turn up in DJ crates.
Who is the VNL Premounted for?
For turntablists, battle and DVS DJs looking for a rugged, tunable system. Straight talk: The 6 mV is lower than the 10 mV of the VNL TRIX and VNL DANCE – so on some mixers you'll turn the gain up a little further. And if you mainly listen at home, an elliptical tip will get more fine detail out of the groove.
Our verdict
The classic of the VNL series, ready mounted: rugged, kind to records and tunable to your style thanks to interchangeable styli. A very sensible choice for tough DJ duty – and a considerate one for your record collection.

Frequently asked questions
Which stylus is fitted to the VNL Premounted?
The VNL II stylus is fitted at the factory. Ortofon also offers the VNL I and VNL III styli, which differ in the stiffness of their suspension. This lets you adapt the system to your style – for example for more groove hold when scratching – without replacing the whole cartridge.
Will the VNL Premounted fit my turntable?
It fits turntables with an S-shaped tonearm and a standard bayonet (SME) connection, i.e. the common DJ decks. You plug the headshell in and tighten it with the locking collar. Then all you need to set is the 4 g tracking force and the appropriate anti-skating. Straight tonearms with a fixed headshell are not compatible.
Is the VNL Premounted suitable for DVS systems such as Serato or Traktor?
Yes. Ortofon explicitly positions the VNL system for DVS as well as classic vinyl setups. The rugged spherical stylus is designed for scratching and back-cueing and treats your timecode records gently. On DVS interfaces with a phono input, the 6 mV is perfectly adequate – if in doubt, raise the gain on the interface slightly.
