The DALI Opticon LCR MK2 in Satin White is a flat on-wall speaker for the left, right or centre channel.

On a light-coloured wall, the satin finish is the least conspicuous of the three – no gloss to throw reflections, and just 128 millimetres of depth. Behind the fabric cover sits a 165 mm woofer/midrange with wood fibre cone and SMC magnet system, topped by the hybrid tweeter module made of a 29 mm fabric dome and a 17 × 45 mm ribbon. This module rotates by 90 degrees so the same speaker disperses correctly both upright and sideways.

Why the Opticon LCR MK2?

Because solving the space problem here doesn't come at the expense of sound. The baffle is 25 mm thick, plus additional internal bracing – the flat cabinet stays calm when things get loud. The bass reflex port channels airflow along the wall, not against it. And because all three front channels are the same speaker, voices in a film move cleanly from left to right instead of changing character along the way.

What you hear

Clarity without harshness. The fabric dome covers the treble up to 14 kHz, the ribbon takes over above that – cymbals don't hiss, they shimmer. Voices come through direct and intelligible, which matters especially for series and films. Down low it reaches 70 Hz; for music that's among the better results in this form factor, for cinema effects a subwoofer joins in.

Who is the Opticon LCR MK2 for?

Bottom line: for bright, tidy rooms where a speaker shouldn't be the first thing you see. Also for home cinemas with limited space in front of the screen. It's not the right choice if you expect deep bass without a subwoofer, if your wall can't bear the weight, or if it should stand freely in the room – the wall is part of the concept here, not incidental.

Our verdict

Anyone who thinks flat on-wall speakers are always half a compromise should make an exception for this one. It's a fully-fledged hi-fi speaker that just happens to also be slim. The trade press put it this way: “With the new Opticon LCR MK2, Dali impressively shows that on-walls are a genuine alternative to soundbars and conventional speakers.” (lite-magazin.de, February 2022, top marks). Which quantity and which electronics suit it best, we at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil will work out with you.

Frequently asked questions

How many Opticon LCR MK2 do I need?

That depends on your setup: two for stereo, three for a continuous cinema front of left, centre and right, five for a full surround setup. It's sold per unit, so you set the quantity freely. We're happy to work through the configuration with you.

Can you tell the speaker is this flat just by listening?

Less than you'd expect. The 25 mm thick baffle and internal bracing keep the cabinet calm, and the port uses the wall surface instead of working against it. What's missing is the last bit of deep bass below 70 Hz – that's exactly what subwoofers are for.

Does it fit next to a wall-mounted TV?

Yes, that's its standard use case. Upright to the left and right of the screen for L and R, sideways below or above the TV for the centre channel – for the centre you rotate the tweeter module by 90 degrees. At 128 millimetres, it barely adds any depth.

What's the difference between the three finishes?

Only the surface. Satin White, Black Ash and Tobacco Oak share the same technology, the same dimensions and the same 8 kilogram weight. So you choose purely based on your interior. The included fabric cover is colour-matched to each finish.
