The DALI Opticon LCR MK2 in Tobacco Oak is a flat on-wall speaker used as a left, right or centre channel.

Tobacco Oak is the warmest of the three finishes – a warm wood tone instead of technical black, making it the variant that blends into a living room with wooden furniture rather than dominating it. Technically it's identical: a 165 mm woofer/midrange with wood fibre cone and SMC magnet system, topped by a hybrid tweeter module made of a 29 mm fabric dome and a 17 × 45 mm ribbon. Because this module can rotate, the same speaker works both upright and sideways.

Why the Opticon LCR MK2?

Because 128 millimetres of depth doesn't have to be a compromise on sound. DALI fits a 25 mm thick baffle plus additional internal bracing so the slim cabinet doesn't resonate. The bass reflex port works along the wall instead of against it – which keeps the bass defined even though there's hardly any volume to work with. And three identical LCRs across the front really do sound the same from left to right.

What you hear

An open, airy sound with clearly drawn voices. The fabric dome carries the treble up to 14 kHz, above which the ribbon adds the fine overtones – it sounds like air, not sandpaper. The bass extension ends at 70 Hz and stays controlled while doing so. If you like films with punch, add a subwoofer; for music in the evening, you don't strictly need one.

Who is the Opticon LCR MK2 for?

Bottom line: for living rooms where speakers should look good without getting in the way – and in Tobacco Oak, especially for rooms with wood and light surfaces. It's less suitable if you don't have a wall that can bear the weight, if deep bass without a subwoofer is a must, or if you want to place it freely on a sideboard – the wall is acoustically part of the concept here.

Our verdict

A speaker that ends the “soundbar or the real thing?” debate pretty quickly. Honestly: most living rooms would benefit more from this than from yet another tower in the corner. The trade press agreed: “With the new Opticon LCR MK2, Dali impressively shows that on-walls are a genuine alternative to soundbars and conventional speakers.” (lite-magazin.de, February 2022, top marks). At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, we'll help you plan the right configuration to go with it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the Opticon LCR MK2 as a pure stereo pair?

Yes, two units make a fully-fledged stereo pair on the wall. You mount them upright to the left and right of the TV or sideboard at ear height. The tweeter module then stays in the vertical position. Only for the sideways-mounted centre channel do you rotate it by 90 degrees.

Which amplifier suits the Opticon LCR MK2?

DALI recommends 30 to 150 watts at 4 ohms. More important than wattage figures is an amplifier that handles 4 ohms stably – most good integrated amplifiers and AV receivers do. At 89 dB sensitivity, it gets properly loud even with moderate power.

Is the Opticon LCR MK2 supplied singly or in pairs?

Singly, the price is per unit. That's standard and practical for LCR speakers: you buy exactly as many as your configuration needs – two for stereo, three for the cinema front, more for surround. We're happy to work this out with you.

How is the speaker mounted on the wall?

Via the mounting points on the back, upright or sideways. Mounting hardware isn't included because it needs to match the wall: concrete, brick and plasterboard each call for something different. Eight kilograms per speaker is no picture frame – if in doubt, our technician Mauri takes care of the installation.
