The DALI Opticon 8 MK2 is a 3½-way floorstanding speaker from Denmark that brings together two 20 cm woofers, its own 16.5 cm midrange driver and a hybrid tweeter in one slim cabinet.
This version wears the Black Ash finish: dark, matte, with visible wood texture and a black fabric front – surprisingly unobtrusive for a speaker of this size. Within the Opticon range, the 8 sits at the top, and you can tell inside too: non-parallel internal panels suppress standing waves in the cabinet, the 25 mm thick baffle keeps the front calm, and the SMC magnet technology keeps midrange distortion low. It's developed and built in DALI's own factory in Denmark.
Why the Opticon 8 MK2?
Because it physically fills a large living room without losing detail in the bass. The dedicated midrange driver keeps vocals out of the bass action, the two 20 cm drivers deliver bass extension down to 38 Hz with headroom up to 112 dB, and the hybrid tweeter – 29 mm fabric dome plus 17 × 45 mm planar ribbon – draws the treble wide and silky rather than sharp. Add a double terminal: bi-wiring or bi-amping are both available – in the Opticon series, that only starts from the 6.
What you'll hear
Large scale, but organised. An orchestra stays clear even when it gets loud; a kick drum arrives as a hit, not as a cloud. Vocals stand free in the centre, because they simply don't come from the same driver as the deep bass. And because the midrange and tweeter sit at ear height between the two woofers, the soundstage stays stable – even if you slump sideways on the sofa.
Who is the Opticon 8 MK2 suited to?
Plain and simple: under roughly 25–30 m², this powerhouse will overwhelm you. DALI states 30 to 150 cm of wall clearance as the frame – without that, the bass dominates, and even the most expensive cable won't change that. If you skimp on the amplifier, you'll buy twice: 40 watts is the floor, and the real fun starts from around 150 watts at 4 ohms. Bring the space and the power, and you get live dynamics in your living room.
Our verdict
The Opticon 8 MK2 isn't a compromise speaker but a deliberate statement: plenty of cone area, cleanly divided tasks, and treble that doesn't wear you out even after three hours. Wrong choice for a small room, very much the right one for a large living room with a demand for level and control. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, we'll tell you honestly whether your room fits – and which amplifier really has it under control.

Frequently asked questions
How big should the room be for the Opticon 8 MK2?
It plays to its strengths from about 25 to 30 square metres upward. In smaller rooms, the deep bass quickly becomes too much, because two 20 cm drivers move a lot of air. Given enough wall clearance and a powerful amplifier, it delivers concert-hall dynamics in return. We'll help you with placement and setup.
Which amplifier suits the Opticon 8 MK2?
Load stability at 4 ohms is what matters. DALI states 40 to 300 watts; in practice, a potent integrated amplifier from around 150 watts keeps both bass drivers dry and precise. Valve amplification works too, but needs headroom. We're happy to help work out which amp suits your room.
Can I connect the Opticon 8 MK2 with bi-wiring?
Yes. The Opticon 8 MK2 has a double connection terminal and is therefore prepared for bi-wiring and bi-amping – within the Opticon series, that only starts from the Opticon 6. The jumpers are included, so you don't need to buy anything extra for a normal single connection.
Why buy the DALI Opticon 8 MK2 in Black Ash from HD Zürisee?
Because a speaker of this size lives and dies by room, placement and amplifier – and that's exactly where we've built decades of experience. We deliver the pair, set it up and dial it in; our technician Mauri is there for service and support. Call: 044 680 22 00, WhatsApp 076 534 22 00 (text only, no calls) or shop@hdzuerisee.ch.
