DALI Opticon 8 MK2 Grille, Black

The DALI Opticon 8 MK2 Grille in Black is the clip-on front cover for the DALI Opticon 8 MK2 floorstanding speaker – acoustically open fabric on a precisely fitted frame that protects the drivers without holding back the sound.

The Opticon 8 MK2 is the largest floorstander in its series, and the area a cover needs to span is correspondingly large. It's model-specific: the Opticon 6 MK2's grille doesn't fit here, even though it looks easy to mix up in a product photo.

Why black – and only black?

Because DALI builds the Opticon 8 MK2 exclusively in Satin Black and Tobacco Oak. There's no white cabinet version of this model, so the reason for a light-coloured cover simply doesn't arise. What looks at first glance like a thin colour range is simply the complete programme for this model – both finishes come with a black front as standard.

What you get

A single front grille for one speaker – for a pair you need two. The frame is cut to fit the Opticon 8 MK2's baffle, the fabric acoustically open, and the cover is held by fixing pins that engage with the surrounds of the tweeter and woofers. On a cabinet this size, that's exactly what feels comfortable: place it, it sits – and nothing snags when you take it off.

Who is the grille suited to – and who isn't it for?

Plain and simple: in serious listening sessions, any cover comes off, this one included – fabric in front of a planar tweeter always costs a touch of fine detail, purely as a matter of physics. But if the Opticon 8 MK2 stands in a living room where kids, dogs and vacuum cleaners are on the move, large unprotected wood fibre cones are a bet you don't need to take. If you run the speaker in a dedicated listening room and let nobody in but yourself, you can safely leave it off.

Our verdict

Not a sound accessory, but value preservation. The Opticon 8 MK2 is the biggest achievement in its series – and the grille is the smallest part that keeps it looking good. Frequently asked questions

Does the grille affect the sound of the Opticon 8 MK2?

Not audibly in everyday use. The fabric is acoustically permeable and sits in front of the hybrid tweeter and the woofers without damping them. For a critical listening session, you can remove it with one movement; the rest of the time it stays on as protection against dust and fingers.

Is the Opticon 8 MK2 Grille also available in Grey or White?

Not as far as we know. DALI only offers the Opticon 8 MK2 in Satin Black and Tobacco Oak – there's no white cabinet version of this model, so a light-coloured cover isn't in the programme either. If you still need a different shade, we'll ask distribution.

Does it also fit the Opticon 6 MK2 or an older Opticon?

No to the Opticon 6 MK2 – it has a smaller cabinet, and the cover is model-specific. DALI makes no compatibility statement for the earlier Opticon generation, so we won't claim anything here either. Tell us your exact model, and we'll check the fit before you order.

How does the cover stay on?

Via fixing pins, entirely without tools. They engage with the surrounds of the tweeter and woofers, the grille is placed on the front and sits firmly – no drilled holes, no visible fixings on the baffle. On a floorstander this size, that's convenient: place it once, it sits, and nothing snags when removing it.
