The DALI Opticon 2 MK2 in Satin White is a 2-way bookshelf speaker with a 16.5 cm wood fibre driver, 29 mm fabric dome tweeter and dual-flare bass reflex cabinet.

White is the finish for bright rooms: against a white wall the cabinet visually recedes, while the black lacquered baffle provides a calm contrast. Technically it's identical to the Black Ash and Tobacco Oak versions – the same drivers, the same ten-litre cabinet, the same tuning. Here, colour decides on the décor, not the sound.

Why the Opticon 2 MK2?

Because it masters the discipline most compacts fail at: depth without being intrusive. The 16.5 centimetre woofer/midrange works with a wood fibre cone and DALI's patented SMC magnet system, which reduces eddy currents and therefore distortion in the midrange. Above it sits a 29 millimetre fabric dome, whose design is based on the tweeter from the Callisto series – finely resolving, without wearing you out after two albums.

What you'll hear

Calm. Sounds unspectacular, but that's the point: the Opticon 2 MK2 doesn't make a fuss about itself, instead laying vocals, strings and cymbals cleanly side by side. From 59 hertz to 25,000 hertz it stays linear within ±3 decibels, with 107 decibels available at maximum. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, this is the speaker we hand to people who want “nothing demanding”.

Who is the Opticon 2 MK2 suited to?

Plain and simple: for living rooms of roughly 15 to 30 square metres, where the speaker is allowed to stand free. Push it flush into a sideboard compartment and you get thick, imprecise upper bass – the rear port needs distance. Bi-wiring fans will also be disappointed: there's only one pair of terminals. And at 4 ohms, the amplifier should be current-stable, not just powerful on paper.

Our verdict

A compact speaker that makes you forget its size once it's properly positioned. In white, it's the version for bright, modern rooms – unassuming on the shelf, anything but unassuming on the first track. Give it a stand and a bit of distance from the wall, and you'll wonder why you were even considering floorstanders.

Frequently asked questions

What room size suits the Opticon 2 MK2?

It's happiest in rooms of roughly 15 to 30 square metres. Below that, the bass quickly becomes too prominent; above it, you'll lack headroom if you listen loud. In larger rooms, a subwoofer makes a sensible addition – or you go straight for a floorstander from the Opticon series.

Can I run the Opticon 2 MK2 in bi-wiring?

No. The Opticon 2 MK2 has a single pair of terminals, so single-wiring only. DALI offers bi-wiring in the Opticon MK2 series only from the 6 and 8 floorstanding models upward. Put your energy into a good speaker cable with cleanly terminated ends instead – that will do more here.

What does the SMC magnet system do?

SMC stands for Soft Magnetic Compound, a material in the woofer/midrange's magnet system. It conducts magnetic fields well but barely conducts electricity – this creates fewer eddy currents and therefore less distortion in the midrange. Audibly, this shows up as calmer, less fatiguing reproduction of voices over longer listening sessions.

Why buy the white Opticon 2 MK2 from HD Zürisee?
