The DALI Opticon 2 MK2 in Tobacco Oak is a 2-way bookshelf speaker with a 16.5 cm wood fibre cone, 29 mm fabric dome tweeter and SMC magnet system.

Tobacco Oak is the warmest of the three finishes in the Opticon MK2 series – a mid-brown wood tone with visible grain that doesn't look out of place next to oak furniture. Underneath, it's exactly the same technology as the other two colours: a two-way cabinet of around ten litres developed in Denmark, with a 25 millimetre thick, black lacquered baffle.

Why the Opticon 2 MK2?

Because DALI brings together two things that rarely go together: a 16.5 centimetre driver with real foundation and a cabinet that still fits on a sideboard. The wood fibre cone is light yet well damped, and the patented SMC magnet system keeps distortion in the midrange low. The 29 millimetre tweeter is a new development based on the chassis of the Callisto series.

What you'll hear

An open, effortless sound with surprisingly deep bass for the cabinet size. The crossover at 2,000 hertz means vocals come entirely from the large driver – you can hear that in how cohesive the singing sounds. Down low it reaches 59 hertz, with the bass reflex port tuned to 46 hertz. Where other compacts start to strain, this one stays composed.

Who is the Opticon 2 MK2 suited to?

Plain and simple: for anyone who can put up a stand, or has a sideboard with room behind it. In an enclosed alcove, the concept doesn't work – the rear port needs space. At 4 ohms and 86.5 decibels of sensitivity, you'll also want a current-stable amplifier; DALI states a range of 30 to 150 watts. It's not suited as an in-wall or outdoor speaker – it wasn't built for that.

Our verdict

The Tobacco Oak version is the cosiest of the three – and it sounds exactly as good as the other two. Give it a stand and a decent amplifier, and you get a compact that makes some floorstanders look old. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, we like to pair it with a current-stable integrated amplifier. Let's be honest: it won't work squeezed onto a bookshelf between the books.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Opticon 2 MK2 in Tobacco Oak suit light-coloured furniture?

Yes, in most cases. Tobacco Oak is a mid-brown wood tone with visible oak grain and works well with both light oak and darker walnut. The black lacquered baffle adds a calm contrast. If you're unsure, send us a photo of your room.

Does the Opticon 2 MK2 absolutely need a stand?

Not strictly, but it's a good idea. On a stand at ear height and with distance from the rear wall, it plays at its cleanest. A sideboard also works, as long as there's air behind it and the tweeter isn't sitting well below ear height. A tight bookshelf is the one placement we'd advise against.

Is the Opticon 2 MK2 suitable as a surround speaker?

Yes. All models in the Opticon MK2 series share the same tweeter and tuning, so it blends seamlessly, sonically, with an Opticon 6 MK2 or 8 MK2 up front. As a rear channel, an AV receiver capable of handling 4 ohms is enough; the 30 to 150 watt range applies here too.
