The DALI Opticon 1 MK2 is a compact 2-way bookshelf speaker in white satin that works with a 29 mm fabric dome tweeter, a wood-fibre cone and DALI's SMC magnet drive.

White satin is the finish for bright rooms – white walls, light-coloured shelving, Scandinavian-style living rooms. The Opticon 1 MK2 is the smallest model in the range and yet no budget model: it gets the same SMC drive, the same 29 mm dome, which according to DALI comes from the CALLISTO C series, and the same Danish manufacturing as its bigger siblings.

Why the Opticon 1 MK2?

Because DALI built against the usual compact-speaker logic here. Instead of artificially boosting the bass so the small box impresses in the shop, the tuning stays linear: the low end ends at 62 Hz, but what's there is accurate. The Dual Flare ports keep airflow calm, the 25 mm thick baffle and the bracing keep the cabinet calm. Honestly – you only notice this after the tenth album, but then it stays with you.

What you hear

Resolution without effort. The fabric dome traces cymbals and reverb finely without hissing; voices sit centred and tangible between the speakers. The low end is compact but cleanly integrated – no boom, no lingering. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil we go through with you which amplifier really drives the white pair and where it should stand in your room.

Who is the Opticon 1 MK2 suited to?

Straight talk: it's made for small and medium-sized rooms, for the shelf, the sideboard, the stand next to the sofa. If you want to fill a large area with sound or run a home cinema with real punch, you're better served by a floorstanding speaker or an additional subwoofer. And to be honest as well: white satin shows dust faster than black – but it almost disappears in front of a light wall.

Our verdict

Small, honest, well built. The Opticon 1 MK2 doesn't sell itself on effect but on timing and cleanliness – qualities you only appreciate after listening for a while. In white satin it's the most unobtrusive way to bring proper stereo sound into a bright living room.

Frequently asked questions

How big can my room be for the Opticon 1 MK2?

As a rule of thumb: up to about 25 square metres it plays confidently, beyond that it gets tight depending on volume. Besides floor area, placement also matters – a stand instead of a shelf board and a bit of distance from the back wall achieve more than extra watts. We're happy to go through your room situation with you.

Does the Opticon 1 MK2 also work for home cinema?

Yes, as a rear or surround speaker alongside a larger Opticon set it's a clean addition, and thanks to the included wall brackets it also works on the wall. As a front pair in a large cinema room, though, it's underpowered – there, floorstanding models and a subwoofer take care of the low end.

Can the Opticon 1 MK2 be bi-wired?

No. The terminal on the back has one pair of screw terminals for single-wire operation; bi-wiring and bi-amping are only offered by the larger Opticon range. That's no drawback for the sound – a decent speaker cable achieves more here than a second set of conductors. We'll quickly tell you which cable fits.

Can I get the Opticon 1 MK2 as a single unit or only as a pair?

We carry it as a stereo pair, just as DALI ships it: two speakers from one production batch, assembled and tested in pairs. Included are two front covers, rubber feet, wall brackets and the manual. If you need a single cabinet for an existing set, get in touch – we'll clarify that with distribution.

Why buy the Opticon 1 MK2 in white satin from HD Zürisee?

Because with a compact speaker the combination is what decides, and we've been doing that for decades. We tell you which amplifier can drive it, which stand fits, and when going one size up is the smarter choice. Service and installation are handled by our technician Mauri. More compact speakers can be found under Bookshelf Speakers, matching electronics under Integrated Amplifiers. For surround setups it's worth a look at Home Cinema and Subwoofers; everything from the brand is under DALI.
