DALI Opticon 1 MK2 Grille, Grey

The DALI Opticon 1 MK2 Grille, Grey is the tool-free clip-on front cover for the DALI Opticon 1 MK2 compact speaker – mottled grey acoustic fabric on a close-fitting frame that protects the drivers without bending the sound.

Grey is the cover DALI includes as standard with the white-lacquered Opticon 1 MK2; in the spare-parts range it's listed under the colour name Mountain Grey. An understated, lightly mottled grey that sits noticeably less conspicuously against bright cabinets and bright walls than a black cover – after all, two speakers shouldn't look like two cut-out holes in the living room.

It's held by mounting pins that engage the surrounds of the tweeter and woofer: you pull it off and press it back on by hand, no tools, no visible fixings on the baffle. The fabric lets sound pass through almost unimpeded while keeping fingers, claws and dust away from the cone and tweeter.

Who is the grille suitable for?

Let's be clear: if you use your system mainly for focused listening in a darkened room, you'll leave the cover off anyway – any fabric in front of the dome costs a touch of brilliance, physically speaking. But if you run the Opticon 1 MK2 as a piece of living-room furniture with children, cats or plenty of daylight around, the grey cover wins twice over: a calmer look and drivers that stay intact. Taking it off takes a second, should you change your mind.

Frequently asked questions

Does the grey grille change the sound?

Not audibly in everyday use. The fabric is designed for acoustic transparency, and colour doesn't change that. For focused listening you pull it off in a second; for the rest of the time it stays on and keeps dust off the cone and dome.

Which Opticon 1 MK2 gets the grey cover as standard?

The white-lacquered cabinet – that's where it's included from the factory. DALI lists it in the spare-parts range as Mountain Grey. On Satin Black or Tobacco Oak it's a deliberate contrast: you may like that, but you don't have to. Ask us and we'll describe the effect honestly.

Is one grille per order or per pair?

Per speaker. You get a single unit, so for a pair of Opticon 1 MK2 you need two of them. If you're only replacing one cover, one piece is enough – just tell us the quantity when ordering and the delivery will match exactly.

Does this grille fit a first-generation Opticon 1?

No. The MK2 front covers are their own items with their own part numbers, and the grilles of the first Opticon series are listed separately. Nothing is interchangeable between the MK2 models either: what fits the Opticon 1 MK2 doesn't sit on the Opticon 2 MK2 or the Vokal.
