The Canton Townus Sub 12 is an active subwoofer that, with its 308 mm titanium driver, Class-D amplifier, and passive radiator, takes over the deep bass below 50 Hz, where most main speakers drop out.

The real walnut veneer turns the unit into more of a piece of furniture than a technical box – handy, since a 21 kilogram cube rarely stays invisible in a living room. Inside, 250 watts nominal power, 400 watts music power, and depth down to 20 Hz do the work.

Why the Canton Townus Sub 12?

Because a large diaphragm area plays more relaxed than a small one having to strain. The 30 cm titanium woofer with double-folded wave surround sits front-firing in the baffle, while the equally sized MDF passive radiator works on the underside. Canton describes the principle as bass reflex with passive radiator: the co-resonating membrane takes over the reflex port's job, without its chuffing at high levels. Level, phase, and crossover frequency are all adjustable, plus three-stage room adaptation.

What you hear

The difference between "it's loud" and "it's there." The Sub 12 works tight rather than mushy: film effects gain mass, acoustic recordings keep their timing, and the bass never overhangs. After a few days, it no longer registers as a separate device at all – it simply feels like the lower part of your speakers.

Who is the Canton Townus Sub 12 for?

Honestly: for anyone with a proper living room and the expectation that film and music work on the same system. It fits the Townus series but can also be matched to other speakers via its controls. It's not for you if you mostly listen quietly at night or if your room is under 15 square metres – a smaller model plays more confidently there.

Our verdict

A confident deep-bass supplier with real wood veneer, clear controls, and enough headroom that it never sounds strained. Plainly put: buying it is quick, getting it to sound good only happens through proper setup. That's exactly what we help with at HD Zürisee – advice beforehand, delivery to Wädenswil and well beyond, calibration on site.

Frequently asked questions

How do I connect the Sub 12 to my system?

Via one of the two low-level inputs, connected by RCA cable to the subwoofer or LFE output of your AV receiver or amplifier. If that output is missing, use the high-level inputs instead and wire them in parallel to the speaker cables at the amplifier.

What's the three-stage room adaptation for?

It roughly adjusts the voicing to your room size. Small rooms naturally reinforce low frequencies, large rooms tend to swallow them. The switch compensates for that before you even touch level, phase, and crossover frequency – saving a lot of trial and error when setting up.

How does a passive radiator differ from a bass reflex port?

Instead of an open port, an undriven membrane co-resonates, moved by the air inside the enclosure. This produces similarly deep bass but without chuffing noise from a port. On the Sub 12, this passive radiator sits on the underside, with the active driver up front in the baffle.

Can the walnut veneer handle the vibrations?

Yes. The veneer sits on a rigid enclosure whose whole purpose is to keep vibrations from escaping. More important for the finish is the flooring underneath: on sensitive parquet, a mat is recommended so the 21 kilograms don't leave marks.
