The Canton Townus 90 is a 3-way floorstanding speaker with downfire bass reflex, here in real walnut veneer and supplied as a pair.

Real veneer on a 105 cm tall column: this version reads more as a piece of furniture in the room than as equipment – and yet sounds like a full-blown hi-fi system.

Why the Canton Townus 90?

Four drivers, three cleanly separated ways. The two 174 mm woofers with titanium diaphragms, double-cone construction and wave surrounds build the foundation down to 20 Hz. The dedicated 174 mm midrange driver keeps the vocal range clear, and the 25 mm aluminium-oxide ceramic dome renders up to 40,000 Hz. Crossovers sit at 170 and 3,200 Hz. The bass-reflex port sits in the plinth and fires downward – which spreads the bass more evenly through the room and gives you more freedom in placement.

What you hear

Substance without pushiness. The low end reaches far down yet stays defined enough that you can sing along with a bass line. The midrange sounds open and unforced, the top end refined without ever getting harsh. The dedicated midrange driver really pays off with acoustic music and live recordings: the space around the instruments remains excellently easy to follow.

Who is the Canton Townus 90 for?

Straight talk: this version is built for living rooms where wood sets the tone and the system should blend in – stereo as well as home cinema. If you absolutely need high sustained levels in very large rooms, larger cabinets or an added subwoofer are the better route. And if you expect identical grain across every unit, real wood veneer will inevitably disappoint you – that's just nature.

Our verdict

Of the three finishes, the warmest in a living room, and acoustically just as strong: deep, clean, forgiving in placement. Honestly: a pair of these columns settles more living-room debates than any soundbar. What belongs in front of and behind them – amplifier, source, cabling – is something we're happy to plan together with you at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil.

Frequently asked questions

Is the walnut Townus 90 genuinely veneered?

Yes, the cabinet carries real walnut veneer. Grain and shade therefore vary slightly from unit to unit, as with any natural wood. If a closely matched pair matters to you, let us know when ordering.

How heavy is a single speaker?

The walnut version weighs around 24.2 kg per unit, so the pair comes to a good 48 kg. Carry them with two people and hold them by the cabinet, not the plinth. On delicate flooring, a protective underlay is worthwhile while unpacking.

Does the Townus 90 also work as a home cinema front?

Very well, in fact. It covers the front range down to 20 Hz and can be paired with the Townus 50 as a centre channel and matching surrounds for a coherent set. A subwoofer remains worthwhile in a home cinema, since it handles the effects channel separately.

Why buy the Canton Townus 90 in walnut at HD Zürisee?

Because wood veneer and room acoustics need to be considered together. We plan the whole system with you – amplifier, sources, cabling – deliver to the region and install on site on request. Our technician stays your point of contact afterward.

Goes well with
