The Canton Townus 90 is a 3-way floorstanding speaker with four drivers and downfire bass reflex, here in white satin and supplied as a pair.

Satin white instead of gloss: this finish absorbs light rather than reflecting it, and it barely draws attention in bright rooms. What it can do, on the other hand, stands out immediately.

Why the Canton Townus 90?

Because here, three ways really are three ways. Two 174 mm bass drivers with titanium diaphragms and wave surrounds work purely on the foundation, a separate 174 mm midrange driver handles the range voices live in, and a 25 mm aluminium-oxide ceramic dome reaches up to 40,000 Hz. Crossovers sit at 170 and 3,200 Hz. Down low it reaches 20 Hz – the bass-reflex port sits in the plinth and fires toward the floor, which makes placement noticeably more relaxed than a rear port would.

What you hear

A big stage from a slim cabinet. The dedicated midrange driver ensures a singer stays present even when bass and drums really dig in. The low end goes deep but stays defined – double bass remains double bass. And when you turn the system down in the evening, you'll notice: even at low volume, the sound doesn't fall apart.

Who is the Canton Townus 90 for?

Honestly: it's made for living rooms of roughly 15 to 35 square metres, where the system should sound great without dominating – in stereo just as much as a home cinema front. If you want to fill very large open spaces at high volume around the clock, think bigger or add a subwoofer. And if you must squeeze both speakers into corners, you're giving away precision in the bass.

Our verdict

One of the least fussy ways to get grown-up sound into a living room: an elegant column, honest depth, forgiving placement. Straight talk: anyone claiming slim floorstanders can't do bass simply hasn't heard these yet. Tell us about your room at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, and we'll tell you if the 90 is the right size.

Frequently asked questions

How much space does the Townus 90 need in the living room?

It's 25 cm wide, 105 cm tall and 36 cm deep – remarkably slim for a floorstander. A bit of distance from the wall helps, half a metre is usually enough. The bass-reflex port fires downward, so placement is forgiving overall.

Are spikes included?

No. The plinth comes with fitted feet and is spike-ready, but the spike set itself isn't included. On carpet, spikes are worthwhile; on parquet, the fitted feet are usually the better, gentler choice.

Which amplifier suits the Townus 90?

An amplifier that stays stable into 4 ohms and delivers around 100 to 200 watts per channel. Rated power handling is 150 watts, music power handling 300 watts. More important than raw wattage is a clean power supply – that keeps the bass tight even at level.

Does the white cabinet yellow over time?

The finish is satin-lacquered and therefore noticeably more resistant than a film wrap. Wipe it with a dry or slightly damp microfibre cloth and avoid solvents. Direct, constant sunlight isn't kind to any lacquered furniture – the speaker prefers a somewhat more sheltered spot anyway.
