The Canton Townus 90 is a 3-way floorstanding speaker with a bass-reflex opening in the plinth, here in gloss black lacquer and supplied as a pair.

Slim front, four drivers, bass down to 20 Hz – the 90 is built for anyone who wants full-blown floorstander sound without two cabinets taking over the living room.

Why the Canton Townus 90?

The difference from many competitors lies in the genuine three-way build. Two 174 mm bass drivers with titanium diaphragms, double-cone construction and wave surrounds handle nothing but weight and foundation. Above them works a dedicated 174 mm midrange driver that lets voices and instruments stand free instead of being squeezed between bass and treble. The crossovers sit at 170 and 3,200 Hz, and up top a 25 mm aluminium-oxide ceramic dome takes over up to 40,000 Hz. The downward-firing bass-reflex port in the plinth makes placement pleasantly forgiving.

What you hear

A foundation you feel more than hear, and above it a midrange that stays uncluttered. Voices don't cling to the cabinets, they stand between the speakers. With larger ensembles – orchestras, dense rock mixes – the advantage of the dedicated midrange driver shows most clearly: it gets louder without getting more crowded. At 150 watts rated and 300 watts music power handling, there's headroom to spare even at higher levels.

Who is the Canton Townus 90 for?

Straight talk: the Townus 90 is the right choice for small to medium rooms where wide towers would visually get in the way – for stereo as well as a home cinema front. If you want to fill a hall or run disco levels around the clock, you're better served with larger cabinets or an extra subwoofer. And pushing them straight into a corner gives away exactly the composure you bought them for.

Our verdict

Slim and full-blown aren't a contradiction – the Townus 90 proves it with forgiving placement and grown-up bass control. Honestly: with a bit of distance from the wall and a slight toe-in, you get more out of this than from the next amplifier up the price ladder. Which electronics drive the pair best is something we're happy to discuss with you directly at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Townus 90 supplied as a pair?

Yes, you get two floorstanding speakers, making a complete stereo pair. Each speaker weighs 24 kg and arrives individually boxed – plan for two people when unpacking and setting them up, to spare both the plinths and your back.

How deep does the Townus 90 really play?

Down to 20 Hz, according to Canton's spec sheet. The bass-reflex opening sits at the bottom of the plinth and fires toward the floor, which couples the bass evenly into the room. For stereo you generally won't need an additional subwoofer, though one still makes sense for home cinema.

Can I connect the Townus 90 with bi-wiring?

Yes, it has a bi-wiring terminal, so you can wire it separately or bi-amp it with two power amps. The jumpers are fitted at the factory, so a normal pair of cables is enough. Anyone wanting to bi-wire needs two pairs of cable and must remove the jumpers.

How much amplifier power does the Townus 90 need?

Around 100 to 200 watts per channel into 4 ohms is a good ballpark. Rated power handling is 150 watts, music power handling 300 watts. More decisive than the wattage is a stable power supply – that keeps the low end clean even at higher levels.

Why buy the Canton Townus 90 at HD Zürisee?

Because a floorstander only shows what it can do with the right electronics and correct placement. We advise you from practical experience rather than a brochure, deliver the pair to you and set it up – and our own technician stays available for service afterward.

Goes well with

A powerful integrated amplifier or a power amp, a subwoofer for the last octave, and decent speaker cable. Matching centre and surround models are found under Canton.
