The Canton Townus 50 is a 2.5-way centre speaker from the Townus range that handles dialogue reproduction in a home cinema – here in gloss black lacquer.

Two 154 mm mid-woofers with titanium diaphragms flank the 25 mm ceramic dome, and the bass-reflex resonator fires rearward. Classic centre-channel layout, current driver line-up – and supplied as a single unit, exactly as a centre channel is needed.

Why the Canton Townus 50?

Most of a film's dialogue runs through the centre channel. It's the most heavily used channel in the whole set – and yet the one most often skimped on. In the Townus 50, two titanium diaphragms with wave surrounds carry the fundamental tone, while the ceramic dome renders the highs finely and with focus. The crossovers sit at 400 and 3,000 Hz, the frequency range spans 30 to 40,000 Hz. Because the 50 belongs to the Townus range, its tonal character blends seamlessly with front and surround speakers from the same family.

What you hear

Voices that stay anchored in the centre of the picture even while a chase scene unfolds around them. Whispered scenes stay intelligible without reaching for the remote; loud passages stay clean rather than harsh. And because a good centre channel can do more than dialogue: on concert recordings it carries vocals and stage sound without thinning out the stereo image.

Who is the Canton Townus 50 for?

Straight talk: the Townus 50 is the right choice if you're building your home cinema around Townus speakers – say, with the Townus 90 up front. If you only listen to stereo, you don't need a centre channel at all, and the money is better spent on front speakers. And if you already have speakers from an entirely different sound family up front, know this: it only truly becomes homogeneous within the Townus family.

Our verdict

A grown-up centre channel that brings together speech intelligibility and Townus tonal character without dominating the furniture. Honestly: skimping on the centre channel is the choice you regret the most, and you hear it in every other scene. Which front, surround and subwoofer combination fits is something we're happy to work out with you at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, by phone or WhatsApp.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Townus 50 supplied singly or as a pair?

Singly. A centre channel sits centred below or above the screen, and your home cinema needs exactly one. If you're planning a complete set, front and surround speakers come separately – we're happy to put the combination together with you so everything matches in the end.

Will the Townus 50 fit under my TV?

It measures 50 × 17 × 27.7 cm and needs a sturdy shelf around 28 cm deep. Feet are included. Try to angle it toward ear height, or tilt it slightly toward your seating position – that noticeably helps speech intelligibility.

Does the Townus 50 need an AV receiver?

Yes, it's a passive speaker with no built-in amplifier. An AV receiver or a multi-channel power amp drives it. Nominal impedance is 4 to 8 ohms, power handling 85 watts rated and 140 watts music power. The centre channel doesn't offer bi-wiring; one pair of cables is enough.

Why buy the Canton Townus 50 at HD Zürisee?

Because a centre channel is only as good as its match to the rest of the set. We know the Townus range from practical experience, tell you honestly which combination works in your room, and our own technician handles delivery, calibration and service on request.

Goes well with

A pair of floorstanding speakers up front, a subwoofer for the foundation, decent speaker cable, and the matching electronics from our home cinema range. More from Canton is found in the brand overview.
