The Canton Townus 30 is a 2-way compact speaker with a bass-reflex enclosure that sounds markedly bigger than its 36 cm height would suggest.

White satin makes it an unobtrusive housemate in bright rooms – inside, though, sits a 174 mm titanium driver with a triple-folded wave surround. The Townus 30 comes to you as a pair.

Why the Canton Townus 30?

Compact speakers usually fail on bass – too little volume, too little excursion. Canton solves this via cone area and suspension: 174 mm of titanium in a triple-folded wave surround that handles long excursions without distortion. From 3,000 Hz a 25 mm aluminium-oxide ceramic dome takes over and runs up to 40,000 Hz. Add a rear-firing reflex port, rounded edges and screwless-mounted drivers – engineering you hear but barely see.

What you hear

Substance. The Townus 30 reaches down to 38 Hz, delivering a foundation many compacts only achieve with a subwoofer. The midrange is open and vocal-forward, the treble refined rather than forward. Important: it wants air behind it. Wedged into a closed shelf compartment, it loses exactly the bass control you bought it for.

Who is the Canton Townus 30 for?

Honestly: ideal for small to medium living rooms, for stereo on stands, and as a front or surround pair in a Townus home cinema. Less suited to large, open spaces with high level demands – there you're better off with a floorstander or adding a subwoofer. If you expect bi-wiring, be warned: the Townus 30 has a single-wiring terminal, double terminals remain reserved for the large floorstanding models.

Our verdict

A compact speaker that delivers grown-up sound without furnishing the room – in white satin, also the variant that stands out least in bright apartments. Honestly: most bookshelf speakers don't fail because of the speaker, but because of how they're placed. That's exactly where we start at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, before you even think about an upgrade.

Frequently asked questions

How much distance from the wall does the Townus 30 need?

Plan on at least twenty to thirty centimetres, since the bass-reflex port fires rearward. Too close to the wall, the upper bass gets thick and the sense of space flattens out. Don't run it in a closed shelf compartment – a stand or an open sideboard is the far better solution.

Does the Townus 30 suit a home cinema?

Yes, very well. As a front or surround pair it blends seamlessly into a Townus set, since diaphragm material and tuning stay consistent across the range. For action films with deep effect bass, plan for an active subwoofer as well.

How big exactly is the Townus 30?

Canton states 21 cm width, 36 cm height and 27.7 cm depth, at 8.1 kg per speaker. On a sideboard, allow a bit more depth so cables and the rear reflex port aren't squeezed. A stand solves the space question most elegantly.

Is the Townus 30 available singly or as a pair?

From us you get it as a pair, including feet, oval fabric covers and instruction manual. That's the usual configuration for stereo. If you need a single unit for a multi-channel expansion, ask us – we'll check with the distributor.

Why buy the Canton Townus 30 at HD Zürisee?

Because with us you don't just get a box, you get a system that works. We look at your room, amplifier and placement, sometimes say no when something doesn't fit, deliver to your home, and take care of service and warranty afterward.

Goes well with

The right height comes from speaker stands, the drive from our amplifiers. If depth is missing, a subwoofer helps; more models in the range are found in the Canton overview.
