The Canton Townus 10 is an on-wall speaker that sits flat against the wall at just 9.7 cm deep, yet still performs as a full-fledged 2-way system.
The walnut version wears real wood veneer instead of lacquer – the grain turns the flat housing into more of a piece of furniture than a piece of technology. Canton supplies the Townus 10 as a pair, two speakers per box. Made for living rooms where technology should blend in without giving up ground on sound.
Why the Canton Townus 10?
Under the veneer works a 154 mm mid-woofer with a titanium diaphragm and a long-throw wave surround, complemented by a 25 mm aluminium-oxide ceramic dome tweeter. The 2-way build is sealed, which makes it forgiving right against a wall – a reflex port would quickly start booming there. The crossover sits at 3,200 Hz, the tweeter reaches up to 40,000 Hz. The drivers are set in screwless, and the oval fabric cover attaches magnetically and lifts off without leaving holes behind.
What you get
Wall bracket built in, no extra accessories needed; feet are included for freestanding use. 60 watts rated power and 100 watts music power are ample for what actually happens in a living room, and 4 to 8 ohms won't trouble any decent stereo or AV amplifier. The frequency range starts at 45 Hz – below that, a subwoofer is best placed in charge.
Who is the Canton Townus 10 for?
Straight talk: the Townus 10 fits as a space-saving stereo pair in smaller rooms, as a restrained rear pair in a home cinema, and anywhere a deep box on the wall has no chance. If you expect a full foundation in a large room, pair it with an active subwoofer – no deep bass comes out of 9.7 cm of depth, however convincing the product description might sound. As a flat all-rounder with real wood veneer, though, it stands pretty much alone.
Our verdict
Walnut veneer on an on-wall speaker is rare, and the Canton Townus 10 makes the most of it: on the wall it looks like furnishing, not retrofitting. Sonically, it's roundest as part of a Townus set. Frequently asked questions
Can I mount the Townus 10 directly on the wall?
Yes. The wall bracket is part of the housing, so extra bracket purchases aren't needed. At 9.7 cm deep, the speaker stays close to the wall. If you'd rather place it freestanding, fit the included feet underneath and set it on a shelf or sideboard.
Is the Townus 10 supplied singly or as a pair?
As a pair. Two speakers belong together in one box, as Canton states in the package contents. That covers everything for stereo; in a home cinema, the pair usually takes the surround channels while larger models in the Townus range work up front.
Does the Townus 10 need a subwoofer?
In small to medium rooms it manages without – after all, the sealed housing reaches down to 45 Hz. For film sound and larger rooms, an active subwoofer is the more sensible solution: it takes the strain off the mid-woofer and keeps the midrange clean.
Which amplifier suits the Townus 10?
Any stereo or AV amplifier with stable output at 4 to 8 ohms. Rated power handling is 60 watts, music power handling 100 watts – that makes the Townus 10 undemanding in choice of amplifier, yet appreciative of clean power. Tell us what's in your rack.

Goes well with
An integrated amplifier as the driver, a subwoofer for depth, and more home cinema speakers for expansion complete the picture. It's all tied together with good speaker cable. More flat models are found under on-wall speakers, the full range at Canton.
