The Canton InWall 989 is a passive two-way in-wall speaker for wall and ceiling installation that forms the flagship model of the InWall series, with a 21 cm ceramic woofer and a pivoting ceramic tweeter.

It works on the Free Air principle: no enclosure of its own, just the volume behind the wall as its resonance space. The metal grille holds magnetically, comes off for painting, and afterward all but disappears – the most elegant way to get rid of a large cabinet without giving it up.

Why the InWall 989?

Because there are living rooms where no floorstanding speaker is allowed to stand – but the sound still shouldn't shrink down to background music. With 21 cm of cone area, 160 watts of music power handling and 88.5 dB sensitivity, the 989 has the reserves the smaller InWall models lack. The ceramic tweeter can be pivoted toward the listening zone, and its level adjusted as well. That lets you correct for an installation spot dictated by the architecture rather than the acoustics.

What you hear

Full-fledged stereo sound with substance. The large ceramic woofer goes down to 42 Hz and delivers body rather than just a suggestion of it, while the treble stays open up to 40 kHz without becoming harsh. In a properly built wall, the 989 sounds stable and mature – a serious system, not mere sound reinforcement.

Who is the InWall 989 suited to?

For living spaces where the system needs to stay invisible without you paying for it in sound quality. It also cuts a good figure as an invisible home cinema front. Straight talk: an in-wall speaker is only ever as good as its installation. In thin, undamped drywall the wall itself resonates along with it; in a solid, damped construction the same speaker plays a class higher. For brief background sound in a guest room it's simply too much – the smaller models in the series suffice there.

Our verdict

The flagship of the InWall series, and the right choice when invisible isn't supposed to mean quiet. Honestly: the speaker is the easy part, the real work lies in the installation location. That's exactly where we at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil start, before anyone unpacks the jigsaw. Call us, write to us, or reach out on WhatsApp – tell us about your room and your wall construction.

Frequently asked questions

How big does the wall cutout for the InWall 989 need to be?

The cutout measures 235 × 343 mm, the required installation depth is 96 mm, and the maximum wall thickness is 40 mm. The visible outer dimensions are 263 × 367 mm. Before cutting, be sure to locate studs, wiring and pipes – or have Mauri, our technician, measure the location on site.

Does the InWall 989 need a back box?

No, it's not strictly necessary. The 989 works on the Free Air principle and fires into the wall volume without a cabinet of its own. A sealed back box or a damped cavity does help, though, if the neighbouring room needs to stay quiet or if the cavity turns out unusually large. We'll plan that with you.

Can the InWall 989 go in the bathroom?

It's not built for permanently damp rooms. In a well-ventilated bathroom it works fine in practice, as long as it isn't installed directly in the splash zone. For wellness areas, saunas or outdoor use we recommend weatherproof models instead – just ask us and we'll suggest suitable alternatives.

Can I paint over the InWall 989's grille?

Yes. The metal grille is held magnetically, can be removed, and painted in your wall colour. Afterward the speaker barely stands out visually. Paint the grille off the speaker and thinly, so the perforation stays open and the treble doesn't get muffled. Two thin coats are enough.

Why buy the Canton InWall 989 at HD Zürisee?

Because we tell you before the first hole is drilled whether the installation spot works structurally and acoustically. Our experienced team plans placement, cabling and the rest of the system, and Mauri handles the installation on site. Call us or write to us – we'll listen first.

Goes well with

For depth below 42 Hz, add a subwoofer; you'll find the drive electronics among the amplifiers and the connection among the speaker cables. More invisible models can be found among the in-wall speakers and wall speakers, and the full range in the Canton overview.
