The Canton InCeiling 865 is a passive ceiling speaker with a 165 mm coaxial driver, supplied as a pair and delivering full-fledged room sound straight from the ceiling.

Round, flat, with a magnetically held front grille you can paint over. Once painted to match the ceiling, the eye sees a calm ceiling – the ear still hears a system worth taking seriously.

Why the InCeiling 865?

The 165 mm aluminium chassis is what sets it apart from the small ceiling models: more cone area, foundation down to 45 Hz, 60 W nominal power handling. That makes the 865 capable of serving as the main sound source for living rooms and open-plan kitchens, not just background music. The 25 mm aluminium tweeter sits coaxially at the centre of the chassis and can be angled – handy when the cutout ends up closer to the wall than you'd like due to the building's layout. You can also switch the tweeter level to suit the room.

What you hear

A balanced, widely dispersed sound that fills the room evenly instead of serving just one sweet spot. Voices come through clean and present, the crossover at 3,000 Hz stays unobtrusive, the treble reaches up to 40 kHz and sounds open without sibilance. At 87.5 dB sensitivity, your amplifier doesn't need to be a hero to drive it.

Who is the InCeiling 865 suited for?

For living spaces where good sound matters but no visible boxes are wanted. Honestly: a flat 90 mm-deep ceiling speaker won't deliver deep home-cinema bass – that's physics, not a flaw, and a subwoofer solves it elegantly. If you want a precise stereo stage in front of the sofa, you're better off with classic bookshelf speakers.

Our verdict

The most sensible compromise in the InCeiling family: enough level and depth for real music, discreet enough to visually disappear. If you've only ever known ceiling speakers that sounded like hold music, feel free to revise that opinion here.

Frequently asked questions

How big does the ceiling cutout need to be for the InCeiling 865?

The cutout measures 204 mm in diameter, and you need 90 mm of free installation depth behind it. 245 mm of outer diameter stays visible. Ceiling thickness may be up to 40 mm. A mounting template is included so you can mark the opening cleanly before the saw starts.

What's the difference between the 865 and the smaller InCeiling 845?

The 865 has a 165 mm chassis instead of 135 mm, reaches down to 45 Hz instead of 50 Hz, and handles 120 W of music power instead of 100 W. In return it needs a 204 mm cutout instead of 150 mm and 90 mm of depth instead of 75 mm. More sound for more space required, in short.

Is the InCeiling 865 enough without a subwoofer?

For music in normal-sized rooms, yes – the foundation down to 45 Hz supports relaxed listening well. For film sound with noticeable deep bass, we recommend adding a subwoofer. That's true for flat-building ceiling speakers in general and isn't a weakness of this particular model.

Does an enclosure need to be built above the speaker?

No, the 865 works as a free-air system directly into the ceiling cavity. Some damping material above the chassis is still worthwhile, so less sound travels to the floor above. For tricky ceiling constructions, Mauri, our technician, looks at it on site and suggests the right solution.

Can I adjust the treble to suit the room?

Yes. The 865 offers a switchable tweeter level adjustment that lets you match the dome to hard or heavily damped rooms. The 25 mm tweeter also sits angle-adjustable at the centre of the chassis and can be aimed at the listening zone. Together, both can even rescue an awkwardly placed install location.

Why buy the Canton InCeiling 865 from HD Zürisee?

Because we think of the sound system as a whole: quantity, positions, amplifier power, cable runs, zone layout. That's not experience you build up in one summer. HD Zürisee in Wädenswil advises you personally, and Mauri handles installation and commissioning on request as well.

For more depth, combine the 865 with a subwoofer. You'll find the right amp among the amplifiers, the connection among the speaker cables. More invisible solutions are shown under ceiling speakers, and the rest of the brand's range under the Canton collection.
