The Canton GLE 50 Center S2 is a passive 2.5-way center speaker with a sealed cabinet that takes on the dialogue channel in your home cinema and makes voices intelligible from the middle of the screen.

Two 154mm woofer/midrange drivers with an aluminium titanium membrane flank a 25mm aluminium dome with an integrated waveguide. Because the cabinet is sealed, there's no bass reflex port that starts to boom in a tight TV cabinet – a detail you only learn to appreciate once you've experienced the alternative. In black decor with a silky matte lacquered baffle, the center stays under the TV right where it belongs: in the background.

Why the Canton GLE 50 Center S2?

Because in a film, most of the speech runs through exactly this one channel. If the center is too weak or sounds different from the front speakers, the whole soundtrack feels uneven and you're constantly reaching for the volume. The GLE 50 Center S2 works on the 2.5-way principle: both 154mm drivers support the bass, but only one plays on up to 400 Hz, with the dome taking over from 3,000 Hz. That keeps the voice reproduction unified instead of splitting it across two identical drivers. With 89 dB efficiency and a nominal impedance of 4 to 8 ohms, it gets along fine with any typical AV receiver.

What you hear

Dialogue that stays put even when half the city is exploding in the background. Voices stay anchored in the middle of the screen and don't wander left or right when someone moves. On the top end the center reaches up to 40,000 Hz, giving sibilants and room ambience room to breathe; on the bottom end Canton states 30 Hz – though in practice, a subwoofer handles the deep bass in home cinema anyway. The main gain is calm: you understand without turning it up.

Who is the Canton GLE 50 Center S2 for?

Plain and simple: for any home cinema whose front speakers match the GLE S2 family sonically, or come from it. Measure first – at 50 cm wide, 17 cm high and 27 cm deep, it needs a proper compartment in your furniture. If you listen exclusively to stereo music, you don't need a center at all, and your money is better invested in the front speakers. And if you run a front voiced completely differently, plan the switch deliberately instead of adding the center as an afterthought.

Our verdict

A cleanly engineered, honestly sized center with exactly one job – and it does it well. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, we'll plan the matching front combination with you, sort out space and positioning in your furniture, and then tune the center to your room and seating position.

Frequently asked questions

Is the GLE 50 Center S2 sold individually?

Yes, the center is a single unit and sold per piece. In home cinema you need exactly one, centred below or above the screen. We're happy to help you plan which front and surround speakers pair well with it.

What amplifier does the GLE 50 Center S2 need?

A regular AV receiver or a multichannel power amp. With 89 dB efficiency and a nominal impedance of 4 to 8 ohms it's uncritical; 80 W rated and 140 W music power handling leave enough headroom for movie levels. More important than raw wattage is that the receiver stays stable at 4 ohms.

Why is the cabinet sealed instead of bass reflex?

A sealed cabinet has no reflex port. That costs a bit of low-end extension, but delivers tighter decay and makes placement in a tight TV cabinet more forgiving, where a port quickly starts to boom. A subwoofer handles the deep bass in home cinema anyway.

How do I position the GLE 50 Center S2?

Lying flat and as close as possible to the middle of the screen, on the TV cabinet below the television or on a shelf above it. Aim it at ear height for your seating position; if it sits noticeably lower, a slight tilt helps. Plan for 50 cm width and 27 cm depth in your furniture.

Why buy the Canton GLE 50 Center S2 at HD Zürisee?
