The AudioQuest Pearl is an optical digital cable (Toslink) that carries the data stream through a low-scatter, finely polished polymer fiber. It's the first tier of the AudioQuest optical range – and still a different league from the grey light guide that comes bundled with every TV.

Why the Pearl?

With Toslink, light carries the data, and how cleanly it arrives depends on the fiber. If it scatters too much, the signal edges blur – the DAC then has to guess when a bit begins. That's exactly jitter. The Pearl counters this with a low-scatter polymer fiber with precision-polished ends, plus Toslink connectors with a brass ferrule that sit snugly instead of wobbling.

What you get

A calmer, more stable connection between your TV, games console, streamer or CD transport and your DAC. Voices stand more firmly in the room, cymbals sound less grainy. Not a miracle – but the audible difference between "it works" and "it works properly".

Who is the Pearl suited for – and who isn't it?

Plainly put: if you're running a high-resolution DAC with a good transport, you're better off with Cinnamon, Carbon or Vodka. For the TV sofa, the soundbar, the console, or as a solid replacement for the cable in the box, the Pearl is exactly the right tier – and your money lands where it does more.

Our verdict

An honest entry-level cable with no fuss: cleanly built, cleanly polished, done. When it comes to length, a quick call is worth it, since optical fibers don't forgive tight bends. HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, 044 680 22 00, WhatsApp 076 534 22 00 (text only, no calls) or shop@hdzuerisee.ch.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Pearl better than the light guide that came with my TV?

As a rule, yes, and clearly so. Bundled light guides use simple fibers, coarse polishing and loosely fitting connectors. The Pearl combines a low-scatter polymer fiber with precision-polished ends and brass ferrules. The light arrives cleaner, and the sound comes across calmer and more stable, especially on voices and cymbals.

Which formats does a Toslink connection carry?

Stereo PCM up to 24-bit, at 96 or 192 kHz depending on the device, plus compressed multichannel formats such as Dolby Digital and DTS. Uncompressed multichannel material and DSD don't run over Toslink – for that you need HDMI or USB. We're happy to check beforehand what your devices support.

How long can the optical cable be?

As short as possible, as long as necessary, and never sharply bent. Polymer fibers don't like tight bend radii – too tight a bend costs light. From three metres upward, AudioQuest offers an in-wall-rated version. Just tell us the path from device to device, and we'll work out the length with you.

Why buy the Pearl from HD Zürisee?

Because we'll tell you when a higher tier really brings something and when it doesn't. Our practiced specialist team knows the systems actually in use around Lake Zurich, and our technician Mauri helps with installation and service. Call us on 044 680 22 00 or write to shop@hdzuerisee.ch.

Goes well with

The Pearl rarely comes alone: for devices with a mini-optical jack there's the matching Toslink adapter, the higher tiers are under optical cables, the counterpart is the DACs & D/A converters, and the full range is in the AudioQuest world.
