The AudioQuest Pearl 18 is an active long-distance HDMI cable that uses built-in frequency equalization to carry the full 18 Gbps over distances up to 15 meters. It's the entry-level option for when there's more space between your rack and projector than a normal HDMI cable can handle.
Why the Pearl 18?
Copper has an unforgiving limit with HDMI: after a few meters, the signal edges soften, and at some point the picture simply gives up – sparkling, dropouts, a black screen. The Pearl 18 gets around this with a signal processor in the connector that sharpens the data packets back up along the way. The conductors themselves are solid Long-Grain Copper with no silver content, the ground conductors are tin-plated, plus Level 1 noise-dissipation against stray RF interference. No frills – just the honest basic setup for a long run.
What you get
An active, unidirectional HDMI cable in 7.5, 10, 12.5 or 15 meters, with a PVC jacket that allows in-wall installation. Because the electronics only work in one direction, the assignment is fixed: one end belongs at the source, the other at the display. Swap them and the screen stays black – a mistake that's fixed in five seconds once you know about it.
Who is the Pearl 18 for – and who isn't it for?
Straight talk: under five meters, you don't need this. There a passive Pearl 48 is cheaper, more flexible and fully 8K-capable to boot. The Pearl 18 pays off once the run to a ceiling-mounted projector or a TV on the opposite wall gets long. And: 18 Gbps covers 4K/60 cleanly, but only up to 30 frames per second in reduced chroma sampling for 8K. If you want 4K/120 for gaming, this isn't the cable for you.
Our verdict
The Pearl 18 solves exactly one problem, and it solves it reliably and without any fuss. We'll clarify beforehand which length and which bandwidth your setup really needs: HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, 044 680 22 00, WhatsApp 076 534 22 00 (text only, no calls) or shop@hdzuerisee.ch.

Frequently asked questions
Why does the Pearl 18 only work in one direction?
Because the connector houses active electronics that condition the signal. They work exclusively from the source to the display. If you plug the cable in the other way round, the screen stays black or reports "no signal". So when installing, determine the direction first, then run the cable.
Is the Pearl 18 enough for an 8K TV?
For 8K at 30 frames per second with reduced chroma sampling, yes; for full 8K/60 or 4K/120, no – that requires 48 Gbps. Over short runs you'd then use a passive 48-series cable, over long runs the active-optical Cherry Cola 48. We'll take a look at your setup and tell you what's needed.
Can I run the cable inside the wall or a conduit?
The PVC jacket is approved for in-wall installation. Plan the conduit generously and measure beforehand whether the connector head fits through. Also make sure to keep a gentle bend radius – a sharp kink puts unnecessary strain on the conductors and often only takes its toll months later.
What happens if I need a longer cable later?
Then you replace the cable – an active HDMI cable can't sensibly be extended, couplers cost bandwidth. So it's better to choose a length with some reserve right away and properly measure the run before buying. Factor in the bend behind the rack and the service loop at the projector.
Why is it worth buying the Pearl 18 from HD Zürisee?
Because with long-distance runs we ask the questions that get lost online: how long is the run really, where does the conduit run, what bandwidth does your display need? Our expert team in Wädenswil will plan it through with you, and Mauri handles the installation on request.
