AudioQuest 3.5mm Toslink Adapter

The AudioQuest Toslink adapter is an optical connector piece that makes a full-size Toslink connector usable on a combined 3.5mm mini-optical jack.

Why this adapter?

Not every device has a full-size Toslink jack. Laptops, older Macs, and some compact devices instead put the optical output on a 3.5mm headphone jack that shares light and analog signal. The adapter fits onto the Toslink connector and brings it down to the smaller format – a firm fit instead of a loose contact, without you having to buy a second cable.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my device needs this adapter?

Look at the jack. If it's rectangular with a bevelled edge, a Toslink connector fits directly and you need nothing further. If it's a round 3.5mm headphone jack from which a faint red light shimmers during operation, it's a combined mini-optical output – that's what the adapter is for.

Do I need the adapter in addition to my AudioQuest optical cable?

Mostly not. AudioQuest already includes a mini adapter with the Forest, Cinnamon, Carbon and Vodka models. A separate one is worth having if you're using a Pearl or a third-party cable, if you've misplaced the included adapter, or if you want to equip a second connection in the house with one.

Does the adapter cost any signal quality?

Not audibly, in our experience. The adapter extends the light path by only a few millimeters and holds the connector firmly in the jack. More important than the part itself is that the fiber ends stay clean and the connection isn't under tension. No dust, no wobble, no problem.
