Anthem MDX-8 – 8-Channel Multiroom Power Amplifier (4 Zones)

The Anthem MDX-8 is an 8-channel multiroom power amplifier that individually amplifies, switches and calibrates up to four stereo zones. Two rack units in the rack, one unit in the equipment closet – and music plays in the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom or on the terrace, each zone with its own source and its own volume. Instead of a tower of four separate amplifiers that you'd also have to wake up individually.

Why the MDX-8?

Four zones sound like a small number – until you actually count: living room, kitchen, bathroom, terrace. And suddenly the flat is full. The MDX-8 is built exactly for this size. Its real argument is called ARC Genesis: every zone is measured separately and corrected for its room, instead of one single setting being forced onto four different rooms. A tiled bathroom and a carpeted living room simply don't have much in common. The Ultra Class D power amplifiers deliver 60 watts at 8 ohms and 120 watts at 4 ohms per channel, 200 watts bridged at 8 ohms per zone. Advanced Load Monitoring keeps an eye on the load, so the whole thing stays cool and quiet in continuous operation.

What you get

Four analog stereo inputs on RCA, plus one optical digital input that accepts PCM up to 24-bit/192kHz. The matrix lets every zone access every connected source, so no room has to put up with the compromise of the neighboring room. Each zone has a subwoofer output with bass management and room correction. Speakers connect via pluggable Phoenix terminals up to 12 AWG. Setup happens in the browser; for home automation, ready-made drivers for Control4, Crestron, Savant, ELAN, RTI and URC are available, supplemented by RS-232, trigger connections and audio sensing. Multiple MDX units can be linked via the analog loop-through.

Who is the MDX-8 for?

Straight talk: the MDX-8 is the right size for distributed audio in an apartment, single-family home, practice or shop – anywhere the number of zones stays manageable. If you're planning four zones today but secretly already thinking of eight, go straight for the MDX-16; adding on here means a second unit. For a single stereo living room, it's the wrong approach – that's what integrated amplifiers are for. And it's not an all-rounder: streamer, sources and control panels come separately, the MDX-8 amplifies and distributes. Setup is an installation job, not unbox-and-go.

Frequently asked questions

How many rooms can the Anthem MDX-8 cover?

Up to four stereo zones, so four rooms each with one pair of speakers. Every zone has its own source, its own volume and its own room correction. Via the matrix, every zone accesses every connected input. If four zones aren't enough, multiple MDX units can be linked via the analog loop-through.

What's the difference between the MDX-8 and the MDX-16?

The number of zones. The MDX-8 delivers eight channels for up to four zones, the MDX-16 sixteen channels for up to eight. The bigger sibling is also broader on the input side. Power per channel, Ultra Class D technology and ARC Genesis per zone are the same on both.

Is the measurement microphone for ARC Genesis included?

Yes. Anthem includes a measurement microphone with dual connector with the MDX-8, 3.5 mm and mini-USB. That's what you use to calibrate every zone individually; the ARC Genesis software is provided free by Anthem for download. You don't need any additional hardware for it, just a computer and a bit of quiet in the room.

Can the MDX-8 be integrated into home automation?

Yes. Anthem provides drivers for Control4, Crestron, Savant, ELAN, RTI and URC. It connects via Ethernet or RS-232, plus a trigger in and out with 3.5 mm jack and audio sensing, which wakes the zones itself when a signal arrives. For smaller installations, the web interface in the browser is enough.
