The Tannoy Eaton Legacy is a 2-way bookshelf speaker with a 10-inch Dual Concentric driver, continuing the HPD monitors of the 1970s in the most compact format of the Legacy series.

What you hear

A point source with body. Voices sit centred and tangible, the soundstage is surprisingly large for the cabinet size, and the bass reaches down to 40 Hz – without a subwoofer. Using the control panel on the front, you adjust treble energy and roll-off to match your room.

Who is the Eaton Legacy for?

For smaller to medium rooms, for vinyl and acoustic music, for nearfield listening positions. Plainly put: it's a bookshelf speaker – but one with 20 kilos and 37 cm of width. Anyone who wants to put it on an Ikea shelf has both a structural and a sonic problem. It wants a sturdy, load-bearing stand, otherwise you're giving away half of what it can do.

Yes. At 20 kilos with a 10-inch coax, it belongs on a sturdy, load-bearing stand that brings the tweeter up to ear height. Placed on a shelf, it loses soundstage and bass definition. We're happy to recommend the right stand along with it.

How big does the room need to be for the Eaton?

It works from about 14 m² upward and is confident up to around 25 m². Its big advantage: it tolerates short listening distances without sounding unnatural – exactly where the Cheviot and Arden start to struggle.
