The Tannoy Turnberry GR is a 2-way floorstanding speaker from the Prestige Gold Reference series with a 10-inch Dual Concentric driver in a 100-litre cabinet of oiled walnut.

It's the speaker many people picture when they hear "Tannoy": broad, warm, waxed, with a Tulip Waveguide and the inevitable tin of wood wax in the box. And despite its nostalgic looks, it's tuned surprisingly true to today's standards.

Why the Turnberry GR?

Because it offers more volume, more headroom and more warmth in the lower midrange than the Stirling, without stepping into Kensington price territory. FIDELITY called the Turnberry GR, in its review (Jochen Reinecke, issue 2/2014), an unreserved recommendation from a sonic point of view — a sentence you rarely read stated this plainly.

What you hear

Substance and calm. The 25-centimetre coaxial driver puts tweeter and woofer on one axis, with the crossover sitting around 1.3 kHz — so the vocal range comes from a single, coherent source. The paper cone with twin-roll surround delivers bass with real volume rather than just level, and the Tulip Waveguide spreads the treble evenly through the room.

Who is the Turnberry GR for?

For medium to large rooms, for loud and quiet listeners alike — and for classically furnished living rooms. Let's be blunt: two 100-litre walnut cabinets are a statement about your living situation. If you want a minimalist look, you won't be happy here, no matter how good it sounds. And in a small room close to the wall it booms — go for the Stirling instead.
