Anthem MDX-16 – 16-Channel Multiroom Power Amplifier (8 Zones)

The Anthem MDX-16 is a 16-channel multiroom power amplifier that independently powers, switches and calibrates up to eight stereo zones. It sits in the technical room, not on the living room shelf – and becomes interesting whenever a house has more rooms than a small four-zone solution could ever handle.

Why the MDX-16?

Distributed audio rarely fails on watts, almost always on room acoustics: the kitchen echoes, the bathroom booms, the office sounds thin. The MDX-16 calibrates every zone individually with ARC Genesis and corrects each one individually – eight rooms, eight tunings, instead of one compromise preset for all. Add to that 16 Ultra Class D channels with 60 watts at 8 ohms, 120 watts at 4 ohms and 200 watts bridged when a single room needs more headroom.

Eight analog stereo inputs, two coaxial and two optical digital inputs, PCM up to 24-bit/192kHz – and a true matrix on top: every zone accesses every connected source independently. One subwoofer output per zone with its own bass management. Control runs via the web interface or via home automation: IP and RS-232, 12-volt trigger, audio sensing and ready-made drivers for Control4, Crestron, Savant, ELAN, RTI and URC. If a house needs more than eight zones, multiple units can be cascaded via the analog passthrough outputs.

Who is the MDX-16 for?

For large houses, vacation properties, practices and retail spaces where music needs to reach many rooms and every room has a mind of its own. Straight talk: if you're planning three or four zones, the smaller MDX-8 is the more sensible choice – eight zones aren't a status symbol, they're planning work. And as a stereo power amplifier for a single living room, the MDX-16 would simply be beside the point. Sources, speakers and control come separately.

How many rooms can the Anthem MDX-16 cover?

Up to eight stereo zones, so typically eight rooms each with its own source and volume. Via the matrix, every zone accesses every connected source independently. If that's not enough, multiple MDX units can be cascaded via the analog passthrough outputs. You set the zone split during planning.

What does ARC Genesis do in each zone?

ARC Genesis measures every room separately and corrects its acoustics individually, including its own subwoofer setting per zone. That way every zone sounds balanced on its own, instead of one preset being forced onto all rooms. The measurement microphone is included, calibration runs on a computer and can be switched off per zone.

Can the MDX-16 be integrated into home automation?

Yes. Via IP and RS-232, ready-made drivers for Control4, Crestron, Savant, ELAN, RTI and URC are available. Without an automation system, you configure everything in the web interface. For automatic power on/off there's 12-volt trigger and audio sensing. The zones remain individually addressable, even from your control system's app.

Is the power enough for larger rooms too?

For normal living spaces, yes: 60 watts at 8 ohms per channel, 120 watts at 4 ohms. If a room gets bigger or more demanding speakers should run, two channels can be bridged to 200 watts at 8 ohms. That zone then plays mono, which belongs in the planning.
