An absorber is a device foot or pad that damps structure-borne vibration between a component and its surface, instead of passing it on. bFly-Audio from Schwabbruck in Bavaria has been making exactly this kind of part itself for over ten years: absorbers, equipment and speaker feet made of aluminium, cork-rubber, POM and Sorbothane. The manufacturer calls the principle MLA – Multi Layer Adjustment, several layers of material stacked on top of each other, each removing a different frequency range.

What you choose by

Two questions are enough. First: component or speaker? The Pure Absorber Set belongs under electronics and turntables, the Talis feet under floorstanding speakers. Second: how calmly does your gear stand? On wooden floors, an old sprung floor, or a light shelf, structure-borne noise has an easy time of it – that's where the effort pays off most. On a concrete ceiling with a solid piece of hi-fi furniture, the difference is smaller.

Straight talk: decoupling isn't a starting point, it's fine-tuning. Placement, room and the speakers themselves bring many times more. If you still have room for improvement there, invest it there first – and come back to the feet afterward. Frequently asked questions

Does decoupling really do anything?

That depends heavily on the setup. The softer the surface and the more sensitive the source, the bigger the effect – most clearly with turntables and tube equipment. On a solid foundation with a stable rack, the gain stays small. bFly-Audio states up to 90 percent less vibration; that's a manufacturer figure.

What's the difference between Talis Basic and Talis Pro?

The Pro has one more layer of material. Both are screw-in speaker feet made of aluminium, cork-rubber and POM glider; the Pro additionally adds Sorbothane with a purple separating film. That extends the damped frequency range further down. The Basic is enough for many combinations, the Pro is the more thorough variant.
