AudioQuest Yukon XLR Cable, Balanced
AudioQuest Yukon XLR Cable, Balanced

The AudioQuest Yukon XLR cable is the balanced flagship of the River series, in which the solid PSC+ conductors no longer sit in foam but in polyethylene air tubes – so mostly in air. It's the last tier of the copper classics before AudioQuest's ZERO-Tech constructions take over.
Why the Yukon XLR?
Air is the best affordable insulating material, and that's exactly what this is about: the air tubes keep the conductor at a distance from the plastic, so the dielectric stores and releases as little energy as possible. Add to that a carbon mesh network of alternating metal and carbon layers that absorbs captured high frequency before it modulates the ground plane. The conductor and construction remain River-typical: solid Perfect-Surface Copper+, Triple-Balanced geometry, its own ground-reference conductor, cold-welded contacts with silver over Purple Copper.
What you get
A ready-to-connect stereo pair between 0.5 and 6 metres, terminated symmetrically on both ends, with direction-oriented conductors and arrow markings in the signal direction. We'll clarify special lengths with our supplier. If you only have RCA sockets instead of XLR, you'll also find the Yukon as an unbalanced version among the RCA cables.
Who is the Yukon XLR for – and who isn't it for?
Plain talk on the fundamental question: balanced isn't a sound tier, it's a transmission type. It plays out its advantage when both devices work internally balanced and the run is long or exposed to interference – say, with mono power amps next to the speakers, or when mains and signal cables can't stay out of each other's way. Many devices also output a higher level at the XLR output; when switching, that first sounds "better" but is simply louder. On short connections in a quiet rack, XLR brings little – there the RCA version is the more honest deal. And for an entry-level system, the Yukon is simply too much cable.
Our verdict
The Yukon is the mature conclusion of the River series: calm, richly coloured, unobtrusive – and the boundary at which you have to decide whether you really want to move up into the ZERO-Tech league. We'll work through that decision together with you, with no sales pressure: HD Zürisee, Wädenswil, 044 680 22 00, WhatsApp 076 534 22 00 (text only, no calls) or shop@hdzuerisee.ch.

Frequently asked questions
My amplifier has RCA and XLR – which do I use?
Use XLR if the source also has a genuine balanced output and the run is longer than about two metres or passes near sources of interference. Otherwise RCA is equally good. The higher XLR level on many devices only means more volume, not automatically more quality.
What are air tubes?
Insulation tubes in which the conductor is mostly surrounded by air instead of plastic. Air stores almost no energy, so the dielectric returns less time-delayed energy to the signal. That's the main structural difference from the Mackenzie.
Yukon, or should I go straight to the Black Beauty?
The Yukon is the classic copper flagship, the Black Beauty the entry into AudioQuest's ZERO-Tech construction with DBS voltage supply. The jump costs roughly double and only pays off on very resolving chains. We'll tell you where your system stands.
How long does a new cable take to break in?
AudioQuest states a break-in time for cables without DBS; in practice we reckon with a few days of operation. The cable doesn't sound fundamentally different afterwards – it settles down rather than transforms.
Why buy the Yukon from HD Zürisee?
Because we've been putting chains together for decades and know when a cable of this class makes sense and when the money achieves more elsewhere. In Wädenswil, you get that assessment thrown in for free – 044 680 22 00 or shop@hdzuerisee.ch.
