The AudioQuest ThunderBird 48 is a passive 48 Gbit/s HDMI cable with Noise-Dissipation Level 5, in which graphene is worked into the carbon layer and an additional carbon layer wraps all conductors. It's the top stage of the passive 48 series in our range.
Why the ThunderBird 48?
At the very top, it's no longer about silver but about calm. The conductors carry the same 10% silver plating as the Vodka 48; the difference lies entirely in the shielding. AudioQuest mixes graphene into the lossy carbon layer around the four FRL pairs and the eARC channel and additionally wraps a global carbon layer around all 19 conductors. That produces Noise-Dissipation Level 5 – interference energy is no longer just deflected but dissolved into heat before it can do any damage anywhere.
What you get
A terminated HDMI cable from 0.6 to 3 metres that exploits the full bandwidth of the HDMI 2.1 standard: picture up to 10K, 8K/60 and 4K/120, HDR with Dolby Vision, plus an eARC return channel treated just as elaborately as the picture pairs. The cable needs no battery or power supply – it works purely passively.
Who is the ThunderBird 48 suitable for – and who isn't it for?
For uncompromising installations: a large projector, a multichannel preamp, a densely packed equipment rack where power supplies, streamers, and power amps share the space. To be blunt: in an electrically quiet living room with a short run, you won't exploit Level 5. There, the Vodka 48 or Carbon 48 give more value back for the effort.
Our verdict
The ThunderBird 48 is the interference-dissipation stage of the range: same conductors as the Vodka 48, but graphene and a global carbon layer on top. Frequently asked questions
Does the ThunderBird 48 have a DBS battery module?
No. The 72-volt Dielectric-Bias System isn't part of this HDMI cable's equipment, so you don't need to monitor or replace anything. The effect here comes from conductor material, direction control, and the graphene-carbon shielding at Noise-Dissipation Level 5.
What does graphene do in an HDMI cable?
Graphene is extremely lossy for high frequencies. Worked into the carbon layer, it converts picked-up interference into negligible heat instead of reflecting it back into the cable. That noticeably lowers the interference level around the data pairs.
Is Level 5 worthwhile compared to Level 3?
Yes, where lots of electronics sit in a tight space or the run pushes its limits. In short, electrically clean connections, the gap to the Vodka 48 stays small. Describe your rack to us before reaching for the top stage.
Is there also an eARC-priority version of the ThunderBird 48?
Yes, AudioQuest offers an eARC Priority execution that puts the cable's best conductors on the audio return channel. That's the right choice if the connection mainly carries sound from the TV to your system rather than picture to the display.
Why buy the ThunderBird 48 at HD Zürisee?
Because a cable of this class deserves an installation that matches it. We plan routes, angles, and connector positions with you, install on site if you wish, and remain reachable after the purchase – as a specialist shop by Lake Zurich with our own technician.
