Yamaha YH-5000SE – the orthodynamic flagship
The YH-5000SE is Yamaha's uncompromising return to the very top of headphones. At its heart sits an orthodynamic (planar-magnetic) 50 mm driver whose technology traces directly back to the legendary HP-1 from 1976 – hand-built in Japan, in the same factory that builds Yamaha's grand pianos.
Sound
Open-back design, lightning-fast transients, a huge, airy soundstage and a resolution that reveals the finest detail. At 98 dB/mW it's surprisingly easy to drive – but it only shows its full potential with a serious headphone amplifier such as the Yamaha HA-L7A.
Two pads, two characters
Both ear pads are included: the leather pads (sheepskin) give the bass more body and definition, while the suede pads in Ultrasuede sound leaner, warmer and more relaxed. So you can tune the sound to your taste.

Straight talk
The ear cups are smaller and the headband looks more delicate than you'd expect at this price. Once you put it on, that's forgotten: 320 g light, balanced clamping pressure, fatigue-free even over hours. But do budget for a good source – on a weak headphone output you're leaving its capability on the table.
Frequently asked questions
Does the YH-5000SE need a headphone amplifier?
At 98 dB/mW and 34 Ω it's easy to drive and plays fine from mobile sources too. For full dynamics and soundstage we recommend a dedicated amplifier such as the Yamaha HA-L7A.
What's the difference between the two ear pads?
The leather pads (HEP-5000LE) deliver more bass body and definition, the suede pads (HEP-5000SU) sound leaner and warmer. Both are included.
Where is the YH-5000SE made?
By hand in Japan, in the same factory that also builds Yamaha's grand pianos and high-end components.
Why buy the YH-5000SE from HD Zürisee?
Because a flagship headphone like the YH-5000SE only shows its full potential with an equally capable source – we advise you thoroughly on that at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, for example on pairing it with the HA-L7A. We listen for ourselves and help you choose between the leather and suede pads.
