Yamaha TSR-400 – 5.2-channel home cinema receiver with 8K HDMI
The TSR-400 is Yamaha's 5.2-channel receiver for a classic surround setup. Technically it's largely equivalent to the RX-V4A: 80 watts per channel, HDMI 2.1 with 8K pass-through and full MusicCast streaming – packaged in a somewhat plainer chassis. If you want a clean 5.1 living room without Atmos frills, this is the uncomplicated choice.
Sound & amplification
Five amplified channels at 80 W (8 Ω, 20 Hz–20 kHz, two channels driven, 0.06% THD) drive a typical 5.1 system. The YPAO auto-calibration measures speakers and room via microphone, CINEMA DSP 3D provides spatial sound fields, and the Compressed Music Enhancer refreshes compressed streams.
Surround & HDMI
Four HDMI inputs and one output to HDMI 2.1, one of them with 8K/60 and 4K/120 (partly via firmware update), HDCP 2.3 and eARC. Picture with Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HLG and BT.2020; for gaming, ALLM and VRR. It decodes Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Via Zone B, the same source goes to a second room.
Streaming & sources
MusicCast integrates the TSR-400 into the multiroom system. Streaming via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AirPlay 2 and Spotify Connect, voice control via Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri, radio via the DAB+/FM tuner. Wireless rears via MusicCast Surround are possible, and a USB input is available.
Straight talk – what you need to know
Like the RX-V4A, the TSR-400 cannot do Dolby Atmos or DTS:X – 5.2 channels, no height speakers. There's no phono input, and only one of the four HDMI inputs is fully 8K-capable. The chassis is plainer than the RX-V6A's. If you need Atmos, a direct turntable connection or more HDMI sources, get the TSR-700 or RX-V6A instead. But for honest 5.1 cinema, the TSR-400 is entirely sufficient.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between the TSR-400 and the RX-V4A?
Technically they're nearly identical (5.2 channels, 80 W, same HDMI and streaming features). The TSR-400 has a somewhat plainer chassis and is Yamaha's retail variant of the RX-V4A.
Does the TSR-400 do Dolby Atmos?
No. As a 5.2-channel receiver with no height channels, it doesn't support Dolby Atmos or DTS:X. For that, you need the 7.2-channel TSR-700 or RX-V6A.
Is the TSR-400 suitable for PS5 and Xbox?
Yes. It supports 4K/120, 8K/60, ALLM and VRR via HDMI 2.1. Note that only one HDMI input delivers the full 8K bandwidth.
Why buy the TSR-400 at HD Zürisee?
Because we'll show you whether the leaner TSR-400 is enough for your 5.1 living room or Atmos ambitions point more toward the TSR-700 – years of Yamaha experience instead of guesswork. HD Zürisee in Wädenswil delivers, sets up, and remains there for you with any questions about your system.
