Yamaha RX-V4A – the uncomplicated way into home cinema

Want clean surround sound in your living room without wrestling with ceiling speakers and Atmos configurations? The RX-V4A is Yamaha's lean 5.2-channel receiver made for exactly that: 80 watts per channel, modern HDMI 2.1 connections with 8K and 4K/120 pass-through, and the complete MusicCast streaming suite. For a classic 5.1 setup, you don't need more.

Sound & amplification

Five amplified channels at 80 W (8 Ω, 20 Hz–20 kHz, two channels driven, 0.06% THD) confidently drive a typical 5.1 system. The YPAO auto-calibration measures your speakers and room with a measurement microphone and corrects levels, distances and frequency response. CINEMA DSP 3D overlays the sound fields of famous concert halls onto music and movies on request, and the Compressed Music Enhancer refreshes compressed streams.

Surround & HDMI

Four HDMI inputs and one output to HDMI 2.1, one of them with 8K/60 and 4K/120 (partly via firmware update), plus HDCP 2.3 and eARC. Picture passes through with Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HLG and BT.2020, and gaming features ALLM and VRR are on board. On the audio side, the RX-V4A decodes Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Via Zone B you can additionally send the same source to a second room.

Streaming & sources

MusicCast connects the receiver with other Yamaha devices into a multiroom system. You can stream via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AirPlay 2 and Spotify Connect, control it with Alexa, Google Assistant or Siri, and receive radio via the DAB+/FM tuner. Optional MusicCast speakers make the rear channels wireless. A USB input is also available.

Straight talk – what you need to know

The RX-V4A cannot do Dolby Atmos or DTS:X. Five channels means: no height speakers, so no true 3D audio. It also lacks a phono input, and of the four HDMI inputs only one is fully 8K-capable. If you want Atmos, connect many devices, or want to hook up a turntable directly, the RX-V6A is the better fit. But for an honest, uncomplicated 5.1 living room, the RX-V4A is exactly right – and fairly priced.
