Yamaha RX-A4A AVENTAGE – Surround:AI and ESS DAC in a 7.2 cinema
The RX-A4A is where AVENTAGE opens its bag of tricks: Surround:AI analyzes the sound scene in real time and continuously adapts the surround effect, an ESS SABRE DAC handles conversion, and CINEMA DSP HD³ brings more sound-field programs than the smaller models. 110 watts across seven channels, three HDMI outputs and Sonos compatibility make it a flexible mid-range AVENTAGE.
Sound & amplification
Seven channels at 110 W (8 Ω, 20 Hz–20 kHz, two channels driven, 0.06% THD; 165 W at 1 kHz, one channel) drive more demanding speakers. The ESS SABRE ES9007S DAC provides clean conversion, and Surround:AI optimizes the effect scene by scene. YPAO here works with R.S.C., 3D measurement, multi-point, Precision EQ and Low-Frequency Mode – notably finer than on the RX-A2A.
Surround & HDMI
Seven HDMI inputs and three outputs (one as a dedicated zone-out), all with 8K/60 and 4K/120 (HDMI 2.1), HDCP 2.3 and eARC. Picture with Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HLG and BT.2020; gaming with ALLM and VRR. It decodes Dolby Atmos including height virtualization, DTS:X, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.
Streaming & sources
MusicCast for multiroom, plus Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, TIDAL, Qobuz, Deezer, Amazon Music HD and more. Works with Sonos (via Sonos Port), offers IP control for smart-home systems, voice control via Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri, plus a DAB+/FM tuner. An MM phono input and MusicCast Surround are included.
Straight talk – what you need to know
Despite its AVENTAGE pedigree, the RX-A4A only amplifies seven channels – an internal 5.1.4 (four height channels) isn't possible; for that you'd need an external power amp or the RX-A6A outright. Auro-3D is also missing (only available from the RX-A6A upward). In exchange, this is where you first get Surround:AI, the ESS DAC, the finer YPAO variant, and three HDMI outputs – a sensible step up from the RX-A2A.

Frequently asked questions
What does the RX-A4A offer over the RX-A2A?
Surround:AI, an ESS SABRE DAC, the finer YPAO variant (3D, Precision EQ, Low-Frequency Mode), 110 instead of 100 watts, three instead of one HDMI output, and Sonos compatibility. Both remain 7.2-channel devices.
Can I run four height speakers (5.1.4)?
Not with the RX-A4A alone – it amplifies seven channels. For four height channels you need an additional power amp or the RX-A6A with more internal channels.
Does the RX-A4A work with Sonos?
Yes, via a Sonos Port (available separately) it integrates into a Sonos system. It also offers MusicCast multiroom and IP control.
Why buy the RX-A4A at HD Zürisee?
Because we've been assessing since 1997 whether Surround:AI and the ESS DAC in the RX-A4A are worthwhile for your setup or the more affordable RX-A2A is enough. Our technician Mauri works out the channel count for your room with you and sets up the receiver at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil to fit.
