Yamaha R-S202D – the honest stereo starting point

The R-S202D is Yamaha's most affordable stereo receiver – and exactly what it's meant to be: a solid amplifier with radio and Bluetooth, no frills. All you need is a pair of speakers and your system is ready. An honest recommendation for beginners, second systems or the kitchen.

Sound & Amplification

2× 100 W rated at 8 ohms, briefly up to 2× 140 W. The power stage is surprisingly strong for this price class and drives normal bookshelf and floorstanding speakers without any trouble. The brushed aluminum fascia and solid volume dial show that Yamaha hasn't simply built this cheaply.

Connections & Radio

Built in are a DAB+/FM tuner with 40 station presets and Bluetooth for streaming from your phone or tablet. There are also several analog RCA inputs (including CD), plus an optical and a coaxial digital input – for your TV, for example. Speakers can be connected on two terminal pairs (A/B).

Straight talk – what you should know

The R-S202D deliberately has no phono input, no network streaming (no MusicCast/Wi-Fi) and no USB-DAC. If you want to connect a turntable directly, stream via an app, or have the room measured, the R-N series is the right choice. But as a simple, reliable receiver for radio, Bluetooth and classic sources, the R-S202D gets everything right.
