Yamaha HA-L7A – flagship headphone amplifier with DAC
The HA-L7A is Yamaha's uncompromising desktop headphone amplifier and the natural partner for the YH-5000SE. It combines a high-quality DAC, Yamaha's patented Floating and Balanced Power Amplifier technology, and a massive, low-vibration construction in a single housing.
DAC & digital section
At its centre sits the ESS ES9038PRO – an 8-channel converter that bundles four channels per side to maximise dynamic range and signal-to-noise ratio. A dedicated master clock with a particularly low-noise crystal oscillator ensures precise D/A conversion. Via USB-B, coaxial and optical you can connect DAPs, a PC or a CD player; PCM runs up to 384 kHz/32-bit, DSD natively up to 11.2 MHz.
Amplifier
The patented Floating and Balanced circuit lets four output stages "float" independently of ground – symmetrical push-pull operation for both balanced and unbalanced headphones, without switching configuration. The volume IC used is the particularly low-distortion, low-noise MUSES72323. Two toroidal transformers cleanly separate the preamp and output stages.
Connections
- Headphone outputs: 6.3 mm, 4.4 mm balanced (Pentaconn), XLR4 balanced
- Inputs: USB-B, coaxial, optical
- Pre-/line out: XLR (balanced) + RCA – usable as a DAC or preamp with an external power amplifier
- 6 sound field modes + Pure Direct bypass
- OLED display
Straight talk
The HA-L7A is a pure desktop amplifier with digital inputs – if you want to connect an analogue source directly, plan for that beforehand. In return you get an exceptionally quiet, powerful stage that confidently drives everything from sensitive in-ears to demanding high-end headphones – and, thanks to the pre-out, also fits into an existing system.
Frequently asked questions
Does the HA-L7A have a DAC?
Yes, an ESS ES9038PRO. Via USB-B, coaxial and optical it handles PCM up to 384 kHz/32-bit and DSD natively up to 11.2 MHz.
Can I use it as a preamp or DAC in my system?
Yes. Via the XLR and RCA pre-/line outs it serves as a D/A converter or preamp for an external power amplifier.
What headphone outputs does it have?
Three on the front: 6.3 mm unbalanced, 4.4 mm balanced (Pentaconn) and XLR4 balanced.
Why buy the HA-L7A from HD Zürisee?
Because we'll tell you honestly whether your headphones can even exploit the HA-L7A's potential – with sensitive in-ears, often less is needed. Our technician Mauri advises on the right source and on using it as a preamp, with years of experience at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil.
